Is the base of the steering column normally exposed on this model? See attached. I imagine debris from your feet can get into that space, am I missing some covering? Thanks.

The section you see BELOW the pitch bolt, is the steering rack itself.
The pinch bolt is securing the lower steering column UJ joint, to the steering column assembly.
It is fairly normal to see this assembly section to be exposed TBH.
