I had an MG3 Hybrid (April 2025) and experienced the over revving as described. I also found the car very noisy in the cabin. I felt like a beta tester for MG, but paying for the privilege. I also found out after I bought it about the year 4 £1000+ service fee. It was the worst car I have ever driven tbh and wouldn’t recommend to anyone. After 1 month I traded it in for a 2 year old vehicle from an established European manufacturer (for 2k less than the price or a new MG) and the difference in quality is very clear. It just works, it has 8 gears rather than 3, is relaxing to drive, has better mpg, it isn’t noisy, different class of vehicle. Wish I known this before throwing away £1000s on the MG
The MG3 Hybrid+ is, in my opinion, almost perfect for the money you pay.
It’s by far the most affordable hybrid in its category, offering at least 60+ horsepower more than the closest competitor. In city driving, it truly shines — quick, responsive, and surprisingly agile.
When driven in Eco mode and with proper throttle control, fuel consumption is exceptional for a 195 hp car.
I consistently manage between 4.5 and 5.0 L/100km, which is impressive given the power and performance level.
The only real drawback appears during prolonged uphill driving when the battery becomes depleted. This is where the system struggles. However, I genuinely believe this issue could be resolved with a proper software update.
After extensive driving, I’ve noticed the core of the issue lies in the way the transmission behaves.
The car shifts into 3rd gear as soon as it reaches around 3,000 rpm, immediately dropping the revs to 2,000 rpm. This prevents the engine from delivering enough power to recharge the battery effectively. So when the battery runs low, the system can no longer support the power demands — especially under load.
I truly hope MG addresses this soon with an update, because if they do, this car will be virtually unbeatable in its segment.
