Leafs suffer from battery degradation as they get older as they lack thermal management of the battery. Zoes suffer from the same and are also prone to motor failures after 50,000 miles or more.

But thanks for the response anyway.
Only if they've been charged a lot on rapids, thermal management isn't an issue when charging on AC at home.

I'm also wondering if the MG4 Urban might be in my price range in 6 months time? (ie second-hand ex demo). My guess is not that quickly, but I could see them going for £17-18k with demo mileage.
It might be. Look at the MGS5 Trophy, list price £33745 and I got mine pre-registered with 5 miles on the clock for £23995 a few months after its launch.

Mmmmm.... thanks for all the suggestions so far folks, very helpful.

I've probably been too harsh on the Nissan Leaf, although I must say I don't particularly like them.

The VW ID.3 is a nice car (my brother has one) but it is that bit more expensive so means getting a somewhat older example.

The Cupra Born is great but again commands better values.

I had thought about a Hyundai Kona, I don't know much about them, so probably need to do some research.

Kia Niro also I need to learn more, love the looks of the Soul, that might be an option too.

MGS5 is an intriguing option but I don't really want an SUV.

Bargain of all might be an MG5, but it is too big really.

Still gravitating to an MG4 LR Trophy which I can get a 24 plate easily for that money.

Keep the suggestions coming, this is very helpful. Thanks.

If you could hold on for a couple of months the MG4 urban ex demo should do the trick.
Any thoughts on the BYD dolphin?
There are some low mileage ones on autotrader around 15k.
I have been in one, lovely cars and well spaced inside.
Don't know much about the Dolphin... I will take a look. Interior is important and that's one area where the pre-2026 MG4 isn't brilliant.

I'm your man for info on the Kona.
:)

I'd really prefer to experience something different... but it is possible you'll be right! 😂
You'll have plenty of spares if you ever need them .... I'd love to buy the Golf diesel if you weren't so far away, they were a great plodder ....

Older or maybe higher mileage depending on how many miles you are going to add. The battery warranty is for 100,000 miles or 8 years, btw.

We looked into those too. FWIW, we decided against them for 3 reasons. 1) The Niro and, IIRC, Kona too are based on ICE vehicles and available as hybrids, so you miss out on the pure EV design aspects - i.e. floorpan / interior space / bonnet length are all compromised because they have to fit those funny mechanical engines in there too. 2) Kia & Hyundai had compromised security systems that could (relatively) easily be overcome by brute force attack (see my posting below on that) which resulted in higher insurance premiums than expected for the vehicle's performance and 3) the Niro (not sure about) Kona has a weakness with the final drive transmission suffering from premature wear unless proactive (i.e. beyond normal servicing requirement) oil changes were performed.

It is quirky don't get me wrong; but quality of materials and overall kit is better than the old MG4.
Also LFP battery; a bonus for me at least.

I had forgotten about Ora Cats, another one to look into.

There's also a bunch of Stellantis cars, most notably the little Vauxhalls and Jeeps, but I have always thought Stellantis wasn't great for quality, technology and reliability... but maybe that's my prejudice?

Be thorough when you look at the Stellantis cars. The Vauxhalls are troublesome as are the Citroen EVs. Neighbour had a Moka EV which spent weeks & weeks at the dealers being fixed but it never was. He got rid & bought a Ford Explorer EV. The Citroens seem to get 'teething' troubles over & over again too. The quality doesn't seem to be there. My MG dealer sells Peugeot & Citroen too. So far they are not very impressed with any of these other EV's. Apparently they come back with issues far to often. That's in direct contrast to MG. Surprising some might say.
