My MG4 replaced a Golf, and I've always seen them as being the same size.
Definitely bigger than the 2014 Golf that I have, feels like a size above - note that this may be due to the much larger interior rather than exterior.

I don't want another MG4 anyway, but everything of that class is too big for me: looking for a small second car.

Renault 4, good space without being huge vehicle, good effiency reports and flappy paddle regen and Google operating system.
Yes, it is appealing, seems to be better value than the R5 too.
P.S. Oh also one-pedal and 750kg towing (if that's of interest - t'is to me!)
Neither priorities for me, but good to know, thanks.

Apparently Renault made some significant improvement to the HVAC system/software on the R4, which will allegedly get to R5 via OTA update, but as standard the R4 has better real world m/kWh

Mine was a 2009 Golf, but you may be right.

My parents had a hire car jeep on holiday (hybrid) and liked it.

I know Stellantis have been pretty poor at EVs with their many-fuel-chassis approach, but the little jeep seemed to get a good write-up and I've seen good prices from Southampton Jeep.

How about a Hyundai Inster ? A little quirky, small outside but good space inside, decent range and comparatively priced well.

Looks are a bit challenging, but it is a funky little thing, for sure and very practical. Can I get over the looks?? Not sure.

Yeh, but your funky, ain't ya. 😉🙂
Actually do quite like um. 👍

Only look while you are inside it. :D How much time do we actually see the outside of our own car ?

Loads, through ship windows. 🙄😉🙂👍

They would give you heaps at the pub if you bought a Jeep over here ......
9 out of every 10 Jeeps are still on the road, only one person wasted the money on getting it towed ....

Any other recommendations?
If a Born/ID.3 is too big and you don't want brand new ID.2 / similar and Fiat 500 is too small, then iMHO you have a very limited choice.

I haven't checked the dimensions but what about a gen 1 Kona?

Is the GMW Ora Cat in the right size range?

It seems to be between the ID2 and ID3 size-wise.

Doesn't have the fastest charging speed or efficiency but otherwise seems ok and great deals out there for them.
