Are star buttons fixed yet?

Hi all, as many of you have also experienced, the customizable star buttons on my steering wheel stopped working a while back - I cannot assign actions (well, I can, but they reset to “vehicle” as soon as I restart the car) and, regardless of what they’re set to, nothing happens when I press either button.

I understand that this is a software problem and will be fixed in an update. I have checked for available updates a number of times but haven’t seen anything.

Has anybody had the issue, and had it fixed with a dealer visit, or a FOTA update?

As far as I know:

• 'Free over the air' (FOTA) updates do not work. In other words, it is not possible for the end user (car owner) to update their car's software/firmware themselves
  • Instead, updates have to be done at an MG dealer
  • In fact, I get the impression you have to warn the MG dealer in advance (when you book your service) so that they can then get authorisation from China to allow them to download the patch for your car!
• Your specific 'star button' bug is in my version of the software (R46). It is fixed in the latest version (which I believe is R62)

  • However, as I say, you have to take it to the garage to get them to upgrade it (I'll be asking for it at my car's next official service).

EDIT (5th Dec 2025): My dealer updated my car (2 days ago) to R62, which fixed the star button problem

Thank you for the info. I’ll get in contact with the dealer. I shudder to think what fixing this issue may break though

Anyone know of over the air updates will ever work... Seems like such a basic thing in 2025
