So it put the hazards on, and did not turn them off when the "event" was over.

yes, but... I jumped into the left lane on a traffic light that immediately turned red so I had to brake quite quickly. I was indicating left (turning into that lane) and when I stopped, I turned my left indicator off but the green turn arrow signal on the dashboard was still flashing - confused me for a second and then I realised that all 4 indicators/hazards were on. I clicked on the hazards switch 2-3 times and they switched off - whilst I was waiting for green traffic light. So, yes, they turned on whilst braking suddenly with quite a bit of decelerating (my guess is from about 30 mph (50 kmh) to a full stop in about 3-4 car lengths (20-25 meters?) - just guessing).

They should stay on until switched off, that would be my preferred option rather than having them turn off by themselves.

I can see the logic in that.

Still would think it was mainly while braking hard it was relevant.

Here, we have to put on the hazards if traffic suddenly stops or slows down substancially.

In the old days i nearly never used the hazards, now on the motorway if i go any lenght of distance i use it multiple times.
