Best tar remover?

Hi,

I have my dad's car while he is in hospital and I've cleaned it for the first time in years. It has a lot of tar built up, what the best product / approach to remove this?

I've always used white spirit, I find it every bit as good as specific Tar Removers, and it's about a quarter of the price.
