Built in Sat Nav minor roads chosen

The MG built in Sat Nav on my 2024 MG5 LR hardly ever picks main roads when choosing a route.
It almost always picks back roads (yellow on OS maps) which are very scenic, but seldom the quickest or easiest to navigate.
Is it a setting I need to adjust or is the software that bad???

Yes. Somewhere in the Navigation settings menu there is a 'Route preferences' setting. It's all a bit hazy for me now after 5 months since my MG5 was written off, but this snippet from the infotainment manual may help.
