MG4 EV Urban
Hi,
I’m quite new into EV. We have at work charges described as 22 kW. How much of this will Urban be able to use ? I looked at some other EVs while they charged and it varied from 6.6 to 11 kW. What to expect from Urban ? This is my first charging ever ;)
 
If you believe AI then the MG4 Urban is capable to charge around 10kW if you use a 3 phase cable..
 
To give you a comparision I also have 22kW chargers at work. Using a 3 phase type 2 cable I get 9.6kW charging from my 2023 MG4. The limiting factor is the onboard AC charger of the car. For the original MG4 it's 11kW but once you account for electrical losses in charging 9.6kW is the actual maximum.
 
Using a standard single phase cable, you will get around 7kWh (-losses) from a 22kW AC charger.

If you are thinking of buying a 3 phase cable make sure it's rated 22kW (32A/phase), while your MG will never make full use of it, it will still allow you to charge it @ 7kW on a single phase supply.

While you get the same 3 phase rate on a (slightly) cheaper 11kW cable, it will only deliver half (3.5kW) on a single supply.

Ok, just plugged the car using the cable from the dealership and it goes 7.2 kW, car app shows 6.6 kW. Photo below. I will need to check if there is someone around with the 3 phase cable and try it as 11 kW charging seems more reasonable.

The biggest clue is looking at the charge port .. if there are pins in the L2 and L3 slots then the chances of there being an 11kW OBC rise dramatically; if not then you have a (probable) 6.6kW OBC.
You talking some magic language to me ;) I can take photos of charging port in car and 'dispenser' and post later.
edit: Ok, found the diagram of the pinout, will check when finished charging if L2 and L3 are there.

It can be. Battery temperature plays a huge factor. Normally I see that when it approaches 95%. If it shares power with other vehicles then maybe that can also be factor?

It came back to 6.6 kW (car). Either some glitch or short pause to allow the battery to rest.

like i said, it might have been either power sharing or your battery was cold and it needed to run the battery heater.
From 95% onwards the rate will slow down and when it hits 100% it will then trickle charge to balance the pack.
 
I checked the plug. As you can see there are pins for L2 and L3. As I don't want to splash £110 for cable that won't work will need to look for someone who uses one in my company and test it ;)

the charging curve for the mg4 se 51kwh does not match my experience over more than two years.
Tbh the charging curve depends on so many factors, it's just best to collect them in a thread so that people can have references based on factors such as batt. temperature, ext. temperature, charger location, charger brand.
Some public rapid chargers will give you a graph of the charging curve as it happens and will let you know if it was limited by the car, the charger, or the grid.
Even more so, i think Fastned and Kempower chargers collect the charging curves worldwide and then publish the average on their websites.
 
Is it normal that passing 80% charging power drops to 4.6 kW ? I thought that if it is just 7 kW it will use it until 100%.
Charging rate will slow as it nears 100%, think of it like pouring water into a glass, you can pour it in fast to begin with, but if you don't slow down near the top it will spill. Batteries are similar in that charging needs to slow near capacity to avoid damaging the cells. It will also balance the battery cells when it reaches 100%. This is where the power drops to virtually nothing and it is topping up all the cells to an equal amount.
