Originally planned to use a ZS EV in 2020, due to delays (Covid restrictions) they are now attempting it next week in a MG5 Long Range. It's just over 1700 miles each way.

"The fundamental purpose of this road trip is to raise money for struggling military veterans but by driving 3400 miles (1700 miles non stop each way) in an affordable family electric car we aim to raise awareness of climate change and the duty we all have to protect the very planet our veterans have sacrificed so much to keep free and to bust myths about electric vehicles and their capabilities.

We will set off from GMP Force Headquarters on Monday 8th November 2020, arriving at Gibraltar on Wednesday 10th where our good colleagues from Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP)will escort us to their Head Quarters from the border with Spain. On Thursday 11th (Armistice Day) we will lay wreath with the Commissioner of RGP and later the same day we will be present at the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant by the RGP.

We will be collecting with buckets in Casemates Square on 12th November and on 13th we will begin the return journey. We hope to arrive back in Manchester on Monday 15th."

What a fantastic idea !.
Great bit of P.R. for the MG5 at the same time folks.
I truly wish you all a safe and pleasant trip and hope you return safely, with some much
raised funds on route.
Miles are you planning on recording some of the trip that you can share on your return home ?.
I guess you will need a wallet full of different charging cards to use on route.
Good luck lads !.

Just to clarify, I'm not doing the journey myself. We're sponsoring, and helped to arrange the loan car from MG, but I'm not doing the driving. I'll be otherwise engaged at MGs press launch for the ZS EV when they'll be arriving in Gibraltar.

I bet you are gutted Miles !.
When you used the word "WE" in your post, I just "assumed" ( the killer of all men of course ) that did include yourself in the trip.
Bugger ! - How wrong can you be !.
Never mind, your mission does have a lot of importance also, but in a different type of way I suppose ?.
"Close, but no cigar 🤷‍♂️" .

Sorry, the "We" bit was a quote off their page to explain what their plan is.

Just donated boys, safe journey-Gib. is just like home !

Raising money for military veterans and raising awareness of climate change are both worthy aspirations and are things that I actively support. I'm just not convinced that an unnecessary journey of more than 4000 miles (plus ferry crossings) is the best way of achieving this.

Hope the guys had a good trip but I'd have been more likely to have sponsored them if they had walked or cycled a much shorter distance.

Sorry.

I agree with your thoughts on many levels however i did donate on the basis that the cause is more important than the method.

I agree with you that the cause is more important than the method. I considered my donation an incentive for the participants to succeed and thus the charity to benefit.

What you are forgetting is that they have just demonstrated that it is possible to drive a cheap MG to Gibraltar non-stop and then back again without getting stranded or even having any real issues.

Many people conned by range / charger anxiety will see this and a barrier to conversion to EVs is removed.

The cost of this trip will more than payback by convincing others to switch away from polluting cars.

With respect I'm not forgetting this. If demonstrating you can drive an cheap EV was a primary motivation they have missed an opportunity. Their blog could have made more of benefits of EVs than it does. In actual fact it mentions a number of occasions when chargers were not working or where diversions were necessary to get a charge. If anything this is likely to confirm the very real infrastructure limitations that prevents more people from adopting EVs.

Since the beneficiary of their endeavours was Walking with the Wounded, maybe an activity involving walking rather than driving may have been kinder to the environment and more in keeping?

At least they're doing something to raise money for a good cause, which is more than can be said for ~80% of the population...

Yes the 'EV benefits' could have been sold better, but my guess is these people don't have a great deal of knowledge in promotion or social media etc. and as such were just doing their best in the best way they knew how. Kudos to them for trying!
