I think if someone is getting some kind of ongoing benefit from an historic injustice it is a bit morally questionable.

Apparently we don't refer to them by that name any more - either "Early Middle Ages" or "Late Antiquity" is preferred - because they weren't really dark, lots of good stuff happened then too and the old name has negative connotations.

Rail gauge and road width relates back to the Romans, that was the width of their wheel spacing .....

There were plenty of records, some are still being found. There are suggestions electricity might have been around during that time, but it went against the beliefs of the religious control at the time, so anything that didn't hold them as being the knowledge of all things as the earthly representative of god, was destroyed.
Witchcraft, a perfect example of Arthur C Clare's 3rd Law "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".
The advent of the printing press is probably the most important achievement that moved us on the from the Dark Ages, too many people learned to read and the control of peoples minds was lost ....
