Considering swapping MG4 for an MGS5 - Test Drive Thoughts.

I assume you compared it with the MG5?
He's been driving one so I'd say yes.
I certainly have, I currently drive both and the S5 is so far above the MG5 it's not even on the same planet. I've driven 2 MG5s for 200k miles total and it's been great, very comfortable to drive but a pita to get in and out of. I had one serious problem with my first one which took weeks to fix but that was the dealer's misdiagnosis, not MG. This was actually one of the factors in my going MG for my personal car. The S5 after only 2 weeks of ownership is just better in almost every way though.

Thanks. I asked because he was also offered an MG4 and it wasn't 100% clear which one he meant.

Just an extra question, but getting in and out is the most important reason to rate the mgs5 much higher?

The MGS5 is an SUV type so it is higher but not as high as a lot of SUV's. The height was one of the reasons for purchasing and when my wife tried the MG4 it was a no no as difficult to get out or rear seats.

For me it's up near the top. I was looking to buy my first EV (after having driven the MG5 as a company car for 4 years, my 2nd one will hit 100k miles this week). Whichever car I bought had to be tall enough for me not to groan getting in and out.
The MG5 is a comfortable car to drive with only a couple of bad points, first is the rain sensor box (Exclusive model) that blocks a large part of your view out the front windscreen, but by far the worst aspect of it for me is the low roofline. My entry method is basically to fall backwards into the seat and swing round.
My list this time last year was the EV3, Elroq or least favourite the ZS long range. Then the S5 came along and the ZS went. I've been a KIA Soul driver for 10 years and loved the upright driving position and space in a pretty small car, so the EV3 (long range Air) was top of the list. It's a lot more expensive for a lot less car than the S5 though. The Elroq priced itself out of my market too.
The kicker for me was seeing others getting silly deals for the S5 and after much trawling finding one myself. I hadn't planned to buy until next year but was offered the LR Trophy for 24k and could not turn that down. I hadn't even sat in one, let alone test driven it but I'm very familiar with the layout and took a risk on the height being ok (it is, easily).
Having heard a number of folk complain about not being able to turn off the EV3's nannying and beeping I'm even happier with my choice.

I have bundles of neg eq and a liability to Santander of around £2500 before I hit the 50% rule on my pcp at which point I'll hand the car back and terminate the finance I think . Unfortunately , unlike the olden days that liability can't be absorbed into the deal.

Just put all four of my MGs through webuyanycar. Quite alarming, I know my px offers were 2-4k above trade, but (these aren’t age corrected, just today’s offers) the ZS came up at 10k, 5 at 10k, XP 18k and S5 19k.
In isolation each of them would still have been a good long term car but certainly all would have been worth less than the balloon.
Will be interesting to see where the S5 is in 4 years time. I won’t be buying another new car as I’ll be a pensioner by then, but what else will I be able to get for 14k at that time?
We buy any car isn't any sort of guide to the value of anything. They don't represent even the low trade value of a car. They are purely there to exploit the desperate and stupid who just want to sell their car immediately for any amount, no matter how low.

Why people still keep using them for any sort of benchmark is beyond me.

As for what you can get for £14k?, a plethora of beautiful, low mileage, 2 to 4 year old cars, take your pick. Here's a search for £14k to £15k (As almost all £15k cars will be available for less after haggling) less than 30k miles, 4 years old at most.

Or you can have your pick of much higher end 5 to 6 year old cars. New & Used Cars for Sale - Autotrader UK
