The radio on my MGS5 EV randomly cuts out while driving. Sometimes it can be because I have used the brake pedal, sometimes the at just slowing down or using the windscreen wipers. Anyone else encountered this or can offer a fix/workaround?

Let's start with the fact that the radio in the S5 is a heap of do-dos from top to bottom.

If a roomful of engineers - software, mechanical, electrical, radio, UI - had been placed in a room and told to design the worst the radio they could, and yet still be able to market it as a radio, they could not have done a better job.

There are so maybe design faults and failures that could be responsible for your symptoms, but I would suggest the leaders are:

  1. The aerial is the bottom two lines of wiring in the rear window, which you might confuse with the rear demister. This could not be a stupider arrangement.
  2. The radio wants to default to FM, such that the moment DAB signal is weak it changes to an FM station (which will be the equivalent station on FM if there is one, but something random if there isn't)
  3. The radio will never remember it's on DAB. If switched off in DAB, it will default to the lowest frequency FM station available, which, in my area is the very worst of heavy rock.
My solution, which I advocate, is to use the phone and either Bluetooth or CarPlay and use BBC Sounds, Global Player or, if available, the station's own app (let le Times Radio), and simply ignore that you have a radio.

Buongiorno a tutti, scrittore dell'Italia.

Thanks for you helpful reply. I’ll certainly try the CarPlay approach.

You can just highlight and press Google Translate:

Good morning everyone, writer from Italy.

I'm reporting the same problem. A friend and I purchased two MG S5s from different dealerships, and after comparing them, we encountered the same problem with the radio, in addition to other issues already highlighted in the forum.

The dealership reassured us that a software update will be released soon... oh well!

Thank you. Does anyone from MG notify you when a software update is available?

No they don't but no doubt when it's available in the UK someone on here will post about it.

In addition to that tell your dealer there is a problem and they might let you know when it's available or when you book the car in for a service tell them you have a problem with the DAB radio and if there is an update it should be installed.

Good morning from England, thank you for your reply. Seems that it must be a software problem. We live in hope that the software update will be with us soon. I’ll keep monitoring this site for information.

Thanks again for your help. My service is not due until July, so I’ll have to live with it until then along with other niggles like being told to concentrate on my driving repeatedly when driving in bright sunshine! Thanks again.
