Effect of hill on range

Good evening folks,

I’m currently debating on wether an mg5 will work for me. I can manage with 150 mile range. Is a 2021 LR likely to be able to do this in the Derbyshire Peak District with equivalent of 2 adults and camping gear on board?.

I'm fairly sure you'll be fine. Hills don't have much effect overall on an EV unless you are having to use the old fashioned brakes on the way down. If you are in the Peak District you are unlikely to be cruising at high speed so you should get plenty more than 150.
Personally I'm really glad that I have a FL which has V2L. It's great when camping to have mains power with you.

More of a “how far can you go” thread.

I think hills are good for EVs.

A lot of battery to get up, but you get regen on the way down, which ICE cars don't get (unless hybrid driving in electric only mode).
 
We live on a mountain 38 kilometres from town. It is pretty much all down hill to get into town to shop. We use less than 10 kilometres of range to get to town to shop.
On the way home it is all uphill and we use around 65 kilometres of range to get home.
If we could get Escher to design our roads so they all went downhill that would be great. But as it is uphill climbs use plenty of range.
When we go down our mountain road to the highway ( 10 kilometres) depending on the battery charge state, we gain between 3 and 5 kilometres of range with the regen set to 3.
I know that our trips to town are a little on the extreme side but it will give you an idea of usage on mountainous terrain.
Basically it will balance out

Depending on how aggressively you climb and how gently you descend the results can be very interesting. I’ve managed to get over some hills almost for “free”.
 
While EV’s are certainly more efficient than ICE car’s on a hilly track, they won’t be able to fully recoup the extra energy used to climb??
No, they certainly won't get it all back.

A few people have made videos driving Leafs downhill and while they might get a small amount of regen it isn't much.



I've just discovered a very early (and rough) EVMan video where he went down a big hill in his leaf in 2015.

However, a petrol car would be effectively "idling" and burning fuel throughout those downhill parts while an EV is using nothing apart from gravity, so there is a big advantage there.
