Hello daft question does the MG come with a charging cable. Just looking to get a charging point installed. But if I get an untethered one wondering if I have to buy a separate cable or if the car comes with one.

It should come with a cable. I also bought an EVSE (granny charger) off Facebook for £20, a decent one too. Only used it once but it's nice to have.

Having a tethered home EV charger, we purchased a charging cable for the boot as our MG as it didn't come with a cable, I think it all depends on the generosity of the dealer. But having purchased one in three years of ownership I think we have used it twice, and the granny charger (that came with the car) loaned to my son-in-law for a week while he was waiting for this home charger to be installed, otherwise un-used.

MG used to supply a Granny Charger with a new vehicle purchase, but in March, my new MG4 came with a nice new Type2 Cable in an MG bag. :)
I got a granny and a type 2 with my MGZS and with my MG5. I only got a type 2 with the eBerlingo.

I was told by the sales manger when we bought our S5 in late August of 2025 :- “They come with a type 2 cable now, MG have dropped supplying the three pin “Granny” unit”.
On the original ZS EV it was the other way around, you had the MG branded “Granny” unit, but your dealer may throw one in if you were lucky.
Otherwise you had to buy your own Type 2 cable, which we did.
When we updated the Gen 2 ZS EV they gave us a type 2 with the car, so this one I sold.
When buying the S5, I explained I liked the back up facility of the “Granny” unit, just in case I ran into a problem with my wall box at home.
So, the sales manger offered to supply us with one FOC on collection.
If not, I fully intended to remove it from the ZS EV.
In all both models, I have the type 2 cable and the V2L cable stored around the space saver wheel under the boot cover.
I only carry the “Granny” now if we are going away for a long weekend to an area that has no public charging available.
I have found very little use for the type 2 cable in the last 3 years tbh.
Public charging is SO expensive now, so it is purely there as an emergency back up.

It makes sense to drop the granny charger, I think most of them sit in the boot untouched for the entire life of the car.

I got a type 2 cable in my S5 but even if I hadn't they can be bought for £50.

I use Granny very nearly exclusively. In 9000 miles, I have used high speed chargers twice, once before I received the granny charger and once when it failed, and 7kW destination (ie hotel) chargers twice. Following a burnt out 13a plug I now only use 13a charging rarely, sticking to 10a when I can. 13a gives me 30% in a night and 10a about 22%.

The overall effect is that I have paid 2.5p per mile including the cost of the Granny charger. To me, it's a no brainer, but I realise that I am the only one in step.

My HS PHEV (Purchased a month ago) came with a Type 2 wall charger cable.
However, my annual mileage is so low I couldn't justify £1000 ish for a wall charger installation.
So I purchased a genuine MG 3 pin (Granny) charger from eBay.
It takes twice as long to charge the HV battery. But that's fine, as I regularly don't use the car for a week or more at a time.

I've used me Granny Charger exclusively for about, 13,500 miles. And never used an high speed charger. Similar to above, after a bit of a scare, I now only charge at 10 amps, it's slower, but safer. And still suits my needs, perfectly. 🙂👍

Only goes to show that “one size does NOT fit all”.
Your usage pattern, combined with the speed you need to charge, will play a big part in dictating what charging method you require.
Granny units, if you are a lower usage case and are not dictated by time, or maybe a faster charging wall box of course.
Everybody will be difference of course.
If what you have works fine for you, then stick with it !.
The whole wall box vs Granny unit thing has been absolutely done to death, let’s not even go there folks 🥴.
Horses for courses as the old saying goes.
No two user cases are ever going to be the same.
If you are happy with the Granny unit and it suits your needs, then carrying a type 2 cable in the boot, could be an option purely as a back up plan, is never going to be a bad idea.
Just on the off chance, you are on a long planned journey and on route, you are hit with a long unexpected diversion, it was not accounted for and now you find yourself running low on battery power to get home.
You are able to find a nearby public charging location, maybe at a supermarket etc ?.
Pretty straight forward, but little use rocking up without a type 2 cable to be able to connect to the post !.
Belt and braces here comes to mind 👍.

The MGS5 comes with a type 2 charging cable although you might have to ask the dealer for one as they don't keep them with the car just in case they go walkies.

As for whether or not to go untethered or tethered is a personal choice. I went untethered because it looks neater, I keep the cable just inside the front door so it's easy to grab and, although highly unlikely, there have been a few cases of domestic charging cables being stolen.

Some dealers provide cables if not haggle for one as part of the deal.
I went for a unthererd charger. Then you can take the cable with you if you need to charge at a AC charger when your out and about.

We decided to go for the tethered wall box after much debate and for carrying a type 2 cable stored under the boot cover, with the space saver.
Storing the cable from a untethered wall box, in clear view every time the boot is opened, plays havoc on my OCD 🤣.
The tethered box and a carrying a type 2 car in the car, is a more expensive option of course, but I did have a true concern, that with the untethered box, it would be likely that I would to do the following.
After charging at home, I would remove the cable from the car, hang over the box, then in a hurry, take off and leave the cable attached at the box, at home.
No problem with this, until you need to charge on route or at your destination.
Then you suddenly realise you have left it attached to the wall box - Dooh !.
I do agree, that the untethered wall box does look much tidier with no lead attached, but our tethered wall box is inside the garage, so is completely out of sight anyway.
The Granny unit does have its usage though.
When one of my close relatives had his ZS EV - he called me one morning in a bit of a flap.
His ZS EV had refused to take any charge from his wall box, he had tried several times and it failed each and every time.
He only had about 10 miles of range remaining and the dealer was too far away.
I asked him if he had tried the Granny unit ?.
He had no idea what I was talking about 🤷🏻.
I explained where to find it and then how to use it.
Straight away, the car started charging 🥰.
When the installer checked his wall box, it turned out to be a fault in one of the type 2 cable sockets.
He had coiled the cable around his untethered wall box and moisture had entered one of the sockets, even though it had the so called weather proof protection boot attached !.
He opted to replace the cable and install a hooded shield over the wall box.
Had he not had the Granny unit as a fall back plan, then he would have been well and truly stuck 👎.
Lesson learnt - always have a back up plan.
Granny unit for the win 🏆.
He has a nice Volvo EV now that naturally, did not come with a Granny unit.
I strongly advised him to retain the unit from his ZS EV when is was declared a total loss by the insurance company, after it suffered a huge rear end collision, while they were stationery in traffic.

My first wall charger was tethered, I had a 10 mtr cable on it which was great because I didn't have to worry about where I parked the car. The new box is untethered and I use a 7mtr type 2 cable which lives on the boot floor. Can shift it if and when needed so it doesn't bother me.
