The Gateway Module routes all the data across the 4 different CAN buses on the car, therefore it is one of the best places to acess all the internal data.
You can get onto it using a breakout lead which does not involve any damage to the actual car wiring. However this is not easy to do and if the connections are not made properly the communication may fail on the car (think christmas tree lights of all the error messages on the dashboard).
