I'm afraid it has done that, whether you intended it to or not. A simple poll asking if members are male or female would have been perfectly adequate.

I for one will never participate in any questionnaire that implies that being male or female is an "identity" which people can choose to adopt, and as for "non-binary", God give me strength.

This is a hill I will absolutely die on.

ETA, having seen the edit. I am not posting as a mod, but as a woman who has had absolutely enough and to spare of men who think they can appropriate womanhood and put it on as a costume. I had hoped this was a place I could escape from all that.

I think best a mod that has yet to pass judgement just delete it tbh. Just as some seem to be offended by it I am offended by their response. Speaking as someone with two transgender relatives whose lives have been transformed by acceptance that I presume would never happen here that is my preference. I'm not going to justify my action any further as it will clearly fall on tone deaf ears.

Oh heck I’ve always suspected I’m weird I loved my MGs and my Citroen but lately I’m partial to displaying my bus pass but I’ve been trying to keep that to myself (unsuccessfully)

Oh God, let's not go there. I've had to use that once or twice to get past ultra-woke gatekeeping questionnaires to access goods or services. (Because I will certainly not, ever, tick a box labelled "female, including trans women", and I'm talking to you, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.)

But here, people can simply not answer if they "prefer not to say". Or even lie. No way to check if people are lying, that's on them.

The basic question of which sex you are could be quite interesting. We tend to assume that most people interested in a car forum are male, and that's probably true, but there are also probably a lot more women here than one might assume. One of our most knowledgeable electrical experts is a woman.

When I was asked to be a mod, Stuart didn't realise I was a woman, and when he did, he started promising to cease addressing the mod team as "lads" and "chaps". I said I didn't mind in the slightest, but he said it wouldn't feel right to him.

So these are interesting attitudes, and an actual breakdown of the sex of the active members might be genuinely interesting.

Can't people just interpret this question as referring to sex/gender according to their own philosophical preference?

Some people don't believe in gender, some people don't believe that sex matters. It's contentious, so let's just leave it up to people to answer as they wish.

I thought a more interesting question (and what I'd assumed this thread was about) is what gender have you assigned your car?
Cars (any machine really) always used to be feminine, but now not so much.
I'm finding the IM5 quite androgynous atm
