Just a quick question for you bright young things out there, because I use an adapter on my 7kw charger (type 1 plug , old car) and I’m not keen on charging in the rain, I will sometimes use the granny charger to charge over night, any problem with that, does it cost more! Might be obvious to some of you but hey thats the beauty of a forum , you can ask as many stupid questions as you like ?

The granny will cost the same but will take 3x longer so may not fit in a off peak window.
Why can't you use the unit in the rain it should be ip67

Well it is ip67 but I have had it trip the charger out when it was caught in a heavy shower , to me it’s still an extra connection however water proof it is

I got one of these for my Xmas lights - could something like this (or the smaller size) to contain the connection work? Despite being a touch bulky

Amazon product ASIN B00D7DU6YW

No, it’s an adaptor which connects between the type 1 charging plug and the car, so your always going to have the join exposed to the elements

Have you thought about changing the cable for one with a Type 2?
I know that you could change the plug alone but the best versions are moulded.

I have but it’s an omhe unit and I’m not sure about opening the box , it gets a lot of weather where it’s situated and to be honest I have asked electricians about but they all seem a bit vague, nobody wants to know from the charge fitting companys they just want to sell me another unit.
so it’s kind of an ain’t broke don’t mend it situation

I know a man who might change the plug for you but it'd involve sending it off. He built me a new EVSE using the wallbox of my broken one. It's worth asking what it'd cost...

In answer to your question though, nothing wrong with using the granny. Just ensure your socket is up to it (i.e. not too old and worn, as this can cause excessive heat built up) and that you are aware it will take 3 x longer.
