Still trying to get the terminology right in my head. The Merc is 2 axle
My DUF is 3 axle middle is a lift axle
Both rear axle
Yes it could but 24.5T to give leeway
Over here:
a single axle drive can also have a lazy axle that goes in front of the drive axle, either lifted mechanically, or by the leverage of the suspension when the load is applied. These are also always single steer, a single wheel each side at the front to steer with, but can have different width wheels to carry additional load, like a heavy engine or the turntable forward of the drive axle to spread the weight across all the tyres on the ground ..... this is the critical weight in Australia, individual weight per wheel set.
The next is a bogie drive, the most common, both rear axles have a diff and can be locked remotely to drive the wheels each side on each axle together, and a power divider lock that creates all 4 wheels on the drive to turn so get through a mud hole, sand or slippery road conditions
These can also have up to two steer axles, so 4 wheels steering, again to spread the weight across more wheels that contact the road.
There can also be a lazy axle and sometimes, for big heavy special loads, a 3rd drive axle, triaxle drive and these are generally also twin steer .....
So, a 6 x 4 is bogie drive, single steer etc
