How are the doors in public car parks?

Quick question for owners, how do the doors manage tight spaces in public car parks? I drive an MX-5, a pretty tiny car, and yet I often have 30cm or so to open the door in a public parking spot. Can the Cyberster's doors handle this type of thing okay? Have they ever refused to open or smacked into the car in the next parking spot?

No way would I be even be thinking about a tight carpark space, in a car like yours,
scissor doors or not.
This is my kind of carpark space. 😉🙂👍

I park exactly like the poster above, but then invariably someone will see the car and decide ‘they wouldn’t door me’ and park right next to me.

I’ve had no issues with the car doors, but they do make me nervous that they won’t stop (they always do)

Mine is at a public car park 5 days a week. Tues-Thurs being the busy commuter days.
But not an issue, somebody asked the same thing last year so took this photo back in Oct.

Have always managed to get in, think only once has the door didn't reach full height but still easy enough to get in.
Main thing to note is that you need to be by the boot before opening the door.

And a couple of times, if you're standing close to the door as it goes up, the car alarm goes off. Which is quickly resolved by on/off on the remote.

These days I typically park with a bit more space on the driver side and the passenger closer to the line.

Thanks, that's good to know. Have you ever had any issues in multi story car parks with low ceilings?

Absolutely no idea. If i'm going to a multi-story then I'm with the wife & kids so won't be taking the Cyberster!

We parked in Dover Travelodge car park day 1 of ownership with no cars around. The next morning car park was empty except for my Cyberster boxed in with a car either side and a van in front. Wife was panicking but doors opened no problem. Would have been a tighter squeeze in the Tesla. Being a sports car they put you on the Truck Deck on the Ferry (if you have selected car type) so loads of room for the doors to open.

My car arrives next week (😊j, reading the manual it says you may need to open the door manually in tight spaces (see below). What does open manually actually mean ie what do you actually do if the door does not open in a tight space?

From Owner Manual
2 When parking normally, observe the distance to the vehicle on the side and the opening of its doors. If necessary, open the door in Manual mode.

3 When a planar obstacle (such as walls) stops the door, the door opening angle may be small, therefore, the operator may need to open/close the door manually.

I think it simply means that if you're in a tight place, open the door manually until it reaches the obstacle (just as you would do with a normal door), and if you can't get out of the car with the door open in that position, close the door and move/park elsewhere.

Just like a car with conventional doors, you'll soon get to know and judge how much space you need to safely open the door.

Thanks, I did not realise you could actually physically move the doors, I assumed they were controlled by the hydraulic piston.

One solution don't park in a tight space. 😉 Ok, if you've got a garage or drive and it's tight, fair enough. But in car parks no way would I be parking in a tight space, not just because of the doors. Also in case someone gives it a smack. 🙂👍

Yes in auto mode the doors are electrically/hydraulically opened, but there is a manual opening mode which I think can be selected somewhere in the menu, I've seen a video somewhere, but I can't find it now.

How do Cyberster owners use the opening mode, set to automatic most of the time and switch to manual if in a tight space? Once I get my car I will get an idea of how far the doors open outwards and guess I will learn from experience 😊

I don’t think I’ve ever changed it, other than to mess about.

The car will stop the doors automatically (but violently) if it detects an issue.

If I’m parking somewhere regularly that would trigger it, I’d set the doors to that height and leave it.

Otherwise I just leave it at 80% and let the car stop if it needs to.
