Birds are also soft and their feathers act as a crumple zone. If it was a bit of gravel a tenth of the mass of the bird it would have been a different outcome.
 
He seemed to still be flying ok .... well, until he hit the ground head first, that can't have been good for him, not his best new yrs eve I'm guessing ........

There is that footage at an Australian cricket match of a seagull being clonked with a fast moving ball , stunned for a few minuets , then recovered , we have birds fly into the windows who do the same. Perhaps......... cue Monty Python sketch.
