Today I did my first long drive in my IM5 performance and I have to say how disappointed I am with the cruise control (pilot mode).

In a nutshell - when it's trying to maintain a gap between you and the car in front, it never just eases off, it always brakes. Imagine you're in lane 2, preparing to overtake a car in lane 1, 75 yards ahead and someone else in lane 1, 50 yards ahead also pulls out into lane 2 to overtake - the IM5 will brake agressively to maintain the pre-programmed gap. You or I would just ease off the accelerator to regain a comfortable gap, the IM5 will brake agressively, always.

Imagine you're in lane 1 being overtaken and you too want to overtake the car in front... You wait for the car overtaking you to pass. You pull out behind it - the IM5 will slam on the brakes because you're now too close to the car in front! You or I would know that the car in front is moving faster than you and you're not going to hit it.

In my opinion it's borderline dangerous and certainly unuseable.

Notes...
I know you can increase or decrease the gap, I tried all 5.
I wasn't cruising in lane 2, I was overtaking safely well in advance and moving back after the overtake.
I've come from an I-Pace which had neither of these problems. It's computer seemed to understand that if the gap is increasing then it doesn't need to brake.

That's too bad, sounds like it's as useless as ACC on my MG4xp.
You would think that after all these years some improvements would be made.

Owned by IM5 for nearly 5 months and totally agree the ACC is constantly breaking instead of just easing off and letting re-gen take the initial control, imagine what the driver behind sees with constant flashing of brake lights. Switching ACC of via the stalk control also causes a disconcerting thumb within the car.
Sadly I've chosen not to use feature and was in hope this could be tuned via OTA update but if MG have no plan for OTA in the UK I have no hope.

The cruise in my Golf R was great, the MG4 all but unusable unless the road is clear. Even then it brakes whenever you go over the brow of hill. Constantly braking and accelerating, it's like it was written by a school student as their first IT project.

The ACC on the MG3 HYBRID I had, was all but a safety hazard! In the 18 months I owned it i should consider myself lucky no one drove into the back of the car.
A pity because when in PILOT mode, the self steering was amongst the best I've experienced in terms of following some really twisty roads.
Of course MG would argue not to use it on narrow roads with parked cars...

I think that the problem with all the driver aids and this is not only with MG, is that they are reactive, not intuitive. Where we as humans might think , "that guy's going to do something stupid in a sec" and prepare for that possibility, reacting if it happens , the system will "wait" until it happens and then react . How well it does this is another question.

My problem is that my 5 year old Jaguar i-Pace did it so well that this brand new, high-tech car seems like a huge step backwards.

So the question is.. Was my Jag just way ahead of the times or is the IM5 way behind!

Reactive may be but have to agree that my last car a Jaguar XE ACC was far better tuned into the road and traffic situations and handled them intuitively and in a very smooth mannor
