Welcome,
I am currently looking into the market, searching for a reliable family car. I found the MG HS H+ interesting enough and within budget, but I have some concerns about fuel consumption on long highway trips. At least 5–6 times a year, I do a trip of ~1000 km, where about 80% of the route is highway.
Currently, with my petrol car (Subaru XV), I try to keep fuel consumption under 10 l/100 km on those trips. To achieve this, I usually keep an average speed of 130–140 km/h — of course, sometimes when you get some BMW or other shitbox in the rear mirror, you have to do a few runs at 160 km/h
. My old diesel car on the same trip had around 7 l/100 km fuel consumption...
Anyway, I found some video reviews on YouTube of the MG HS H+, where the user had almost 13 l/100 km when driving on the highway with an average speed of 140 km/h. Is that correct? In other videos from the same guy, he tested the MG HS PHEV, and there he had an average of 11 l/100 km at the same average speed.
I am actually worried whether this car is OK for my type of usage. I mostly work remotely, but going to the office, gym, or shops is usually a 10–20 km city/bypass trip, so around 500 km per month. This might change later this year, because I’ll have a kid, so he might force me to go to the office more often to get some work done
.
Now I’m not sure whether I should go for the MG HS H+, HS without EV or the EHS instead. Is the fuel consumption really that bad? Or should I look for a different brand if this is important to me? How does it compare to other FHEV cars like the Ford Kuga or Toyota RAV4? My friend has a 5th-gen RAV4 FHEV, and he told me he gets an average of 9 l/100 km on the highway.
