Page 42 of the owners manual (for Type 3 battery packs, 64kWh) indicates that 3-phase charging is supported at 11kW? Am I misreading ?

My Zappi supports 3-phase (I'm lucky to have 3-phase to the house). Do I need to do anything more than switch the Zappi to 3-phase ?

I just have the Type 2 cable which came with the car - do I need a special cable to support 3-phase ?

The type 2 cable will need to be a 3 phase cable (i.e. with pins L2 and L3 connected).

Do we assume that it's not charging at 11kW as you're posting the question here?

No you shouldn't assume that. I'm trying it now. Of course if my cable isn't 3 phase it won't work.

Asking the question because I thought I'd been told UK MG didn't support 3 phase.

I'll report back tomorrow.

First gen MG4 NMC's had 3 phase chargers, as do ER's. Not sure about ZS though (assuming your profile is up-to-date)?

I'm pretty sure the face-lift MG5 supported 3 phase. I never tried it with mine, as never had the chance. 3 phase cables are not cheap, but if you've got it at home it will certainly speed things up. Can you get the cheap night time rate with 3 phase?

Sorry not updated my profile - I'm in the MG S5 now

Checked both the Type 2 cables I have, neither have L2/L3.

Recommendations for 3-phase cables please ?

Really? I thought most public AC chargers (supermarkets etc.) were 3 phase, rather than single phase.
It's worth checking Zapmap - the areas where I stop to charge when away with work are around a 50/50 split between single and 3phase.

I purchased a 3 phase cable for my MG5 (not the S5), since my car only came with a single phase cable. and it makes a notable difference.

Two hours on a 3phase charger adds around 20kWh (or 80 miles). On single phase, that's around 13 kWh (or 52 miles). Nothing groundbreaking but a few extra miles for the same time charging is always welcome.

Worth noting regarding single / 3 phase charging and cables:
  • If the public charger is 11kw 3 phase, you'll only get around 3kw charging speeds from a single phase car/cable (you'll still get your 7kw rate from both a 7 or 22kw charging point).
  • If you buy a 3 Phase cable, always get a 22kw one even though your car won't support the full 22kW. Using an 11kW cable on a 7kW charger will only deliver around 3kW.

11kW chargers do seem to be rather rare though - 7 and 22 are much more common.

My (tethered) Zappi installed by Octopus is three phase capable although we don't have it here. Regarding public AC chargers a lot of the council ones installed in public car parks in my area are 3 phase, similarly on my recent visit to Scotland most of the ones I tried were 3-phase.
