I say that, but when myself and @Doug C swapped cars, I knew as soon as I went through 'the zone' that his car was vibe free.

It was a bloody revelation let me tell you.

Exactly as my car should have been and on stock rubber to boot!

Yeah, I know I’m not a mechanic but my much older brother is and I’m very technically minded.

I’ve got a private pilot’s licence and work in the nuclear industry. I’m not saying that to big myself up, but it’s pretty obvious the cause of the problem is not something a steering damper will solve (though I’m hopeful as I don’t want the hassle and want to be wrong!)

It feels very much driveshaft or motor related. Speculation; but if one of those was out of balance and then started resonating it would explain why acceleration makes it worse and it doesn’t stop until under a certain speed.

Steering dampers will just mask the feeling through the steering wheel but I can feel it through the whole car and hear it too. The most expensive problem is a motor out of balance. My guess is the rear motor is different to the other models (since drive mode has no effect and the rear motor is always engaged), it has a common defect and is way too expensive to replace. The factory fix was probably not on the vehicle production line but a change to the motor production line.

Definitely the working theory that has been spoken about with various members also speculating that the masking of the vibes is only doing that and that unnecessary wear could also be going on in the background.

Get rid mate and swap for another one, you are still in that period where you can reject without giving them a shot at the repair it just gets more drawn out after that.

You mentioned a Megane, with someone with a family member with a Megane id recommend it but don't expect it to ride like your MG4 or your Born it's FWD and handles completely differently.

In saying that, if that doesn't bother you the cabin is on another level, the software is Google (so you don't even need to worry about your phone) OTA updates work seamlessly and not just to the operating system there have been updates for the motor etc all came through and it charges at 22kw AC which may not seem like a big deal but is really good to have.
If you get a slightly newer one they all started coming with heat pumps as standard.

Deffo feel something with mine, easing speed up into the zone is normally ok but if you accelerate harder up into the zone you do get some resonance/drumming thru the car which persists until you back down to maybe under 50mph.
It is the oddest thing for sure.

Harking back to the 30 days comment ... If you've reported the issue within 30 days and are affording them the opportunity to repair, the 30 day clock has stopped. If the goods still don't confirm to contract then you can reject for a full refund (or a replacement if they agree)

Mine went in today. Had a bit of a list of things I’ve noticed since but nothing major other than the vibe and I noticed it turns left with the wheel centred and has to be about 5 degrees right of centre to go in a straight line (which I suspect is related as the car doesn’t pull left).

It’s sort of going how I hoped. When I checked it in online I said I intend to reject it if they can’t completely solve the vibration problem. I could see they were working on it from constant warnings on iSMART about brakes and steering etc. They went through about 15% battery test driving it and called late this afternoon to say they need to work on it tomorrow as well as they haven’t fixed everything. So my hope is the dampers haven’t worked (as expected) and they are going to do whatever actually fixes it or are at least trying to.

Wishful thinking perhaps but I knew if they handed it back today it would definitely just be dampers and likely not work.

Got the car back. It was wishful thinking The technician confirmed it does what I said, ruled out problems with suspension, steering or wheel balancing (didn’t know it was in for dampers) reported it back to MG as a warranty request and got the ‘characteristic’ response back. They didn’t actually fit the dampers as whoever did it apparently misinterpreted the response about fitting dampers. Although I expect it already has them fitted at the factory.

They showed it to me but said they couldn’t give it to me but it’s already in this thread I think. Basically some cars have it others don’t and it’s a ‘characteristic’ due to having two motors and to spin it to customers that it’s normal. I did get a good look at the other side of what they showed me and it has the word ‘fault’ in the heading.

They know I already knew about it and they are having it back to fit the dampers, and agreed to take them off if they make it worse. I did say if it comes to that I’ll reject the car. In fairness to them they weren’t even slightly defensive about it. The response from MG says there isn’t a fix but the service guy knows the score. When I said there is a fix but MG don’t want to pay for it, the reply was pretty much that they know; they get caught in the middle.

On the plus side they fixed everything else and the infotainment is now fully up to date and the LKA has had the recall update!

It's mind boggling that they can call it a characteristic when not all cars have the problem. They're really not doing themselves any favours. I would guess that people getting this sort of brush-off are less likely to take the chance on buying another MG.

I think I can feel “it” on mine (July 24 build date) when I’m in the speed zone quoted. I’m still rose tinted but it feels like what everyone else describes. However: crucially has there been any direct failure of any components linked to it? That would really ramp up a factory response (not necessarily a solution though!) or set up for a class action.
Last time I checked arethereanyleft there were barely 1000 UK registered XPs, so we are definitely a minority by comparison.
The motoring press generally recommend the Ext range Trophy over the XP and I know they are highly similar and the Trophy is still a good car, but faults aside the XP is still a Great Car!

I've also pointed out many times before that any secondary wear and tear that comes about will "probably" be out of the limited warranty and fully payable by the customer.

Would they later agree that the "Characteristic" had accelerated to failure, the proposed life of any given component?

Spot on given their reluctance (in a lot of cases) to carry out warranty work that shouldn't even be open to debate, you can almost guarantee they would step away from any problems trying to be blamed on the characteristic

He said Volvo use dampers a lot and fit them to deal with vibration problems that are hard to solve rather than fix the source (“they fit them all over the place”). He said they are basically just weights with a rubber centre that clamp on to prevent vibration building up. He is actually thinking about buying an XPower himself and said it’s probably nothing to worry about unless the source is a motor. From my description he reckons it probably a drive shaft that starts resonating under certain conditions (as I think you suggested earlier on in the thread). He isn’t put off buying one as he reckons he could track it down and fix it properly himself so long as it isn’t a motor.

I’ll get the dampers fitted and try to get him to drive it if they don’t do the job for his opinion. I already offered him a go in it but he was a bit reluctant as he already wants one and reckons it will cause too much temptation

Dampers are not the issue its sub frame and bushes so the motors need to be pulled out new k frame and sub frame bushes and everything put back in..

Mine has been fixed for a over a month now and still great no vibe at all anymore ..

Now for MG UK to spin the characteristic BS is just plain disgusting ..

As you cant or dont fix a characteristic you fix a fault ( of which MG has done to its later X powers)

I can confirm as having to my understanding the first fix in Australia there is a fix for pre mid 2024 cars that have the vibration ..

As for a non MG dealership or mechanic to fix it yeah that wont be cheap even if you ordered the parts from MG which you could the price would be in the thousands .

My car was in the dealership for about a week and i would say atleast 3 -4 of them was the mechanic working on it so labor and parts would have probably been to the tune of 7k to 10k aud

Ill be getting Margaret lowered soon ive had the H&R lowered springs sitting in my lounge for near on 10 months waiting to get the fix and now i have it i was waiting to just make sure no return of the vibe before fitting them ..

Think ive posted the invoice before but just though is do it again as its not a simple task its quite involved and i would assume as there is no pricing of the parts a costly one as well

The dampers are on now and it’s improved it to the point that if I wasn’t already aware of the problem I would probably think it was just tyre tread or something like that and wouldn’t have thought to take it in under warranty. At 69 mph and 75 mph it’s more noticeable than any other speed but 70 is acceptable now. It’s doesn’t need to be driven below 45 again for it to become unnoticeable now.

I’ll go the motorway route to work the next few days and make my mind up about rejecting it.

It is and it was a fight and a long wait to get it done ..

I know a lot here are upset, and rightly so, with the lack of just plain customer service MG UK are giving but i urge the fight ..

My fight was out of principle I bought a NEW CAR with a warranty and it should be treated and fixed as such so I fought !!

I hardly drive on the freeway or over 100km/h for a sustained period of time very often, so the vibe annoyed me hardly ever. BUT once again it was the principle of it not the actual fix !!

Am I happy? HELL YES but not the point !!
