Note to mods, not sure if I'm allowed to resurrect a post, but this is buried on page 46 of a 48 page thread and not sure many new to the forum readers would start on page 1 and continue to page 48
(Although I did!!🤣) So wanted to re post (with updates at the bottom)👍

If I am honest (and I am) we only went to test drive an MG4 for a bit of a laugh.
My Audi Etron was coming to the end of its 3 year warranty, and with two warranty related issues dealt with in the last 3 months decided to have a change and getting something brand new would be the way to go.

"The" wife is retired and I am very nearly retired, so we have become very much more value aware, hence popping into my local MG Dealer (O C Davies Carmarthen)
Booked in to drive an MG4 at 11am on 29th August and he gave us an hours free rein.
Only the standard car on offer for the test drive, but we were both very impressed with it. (Surprisingly so if I am honest) ((and you know that I am 🤣))

I was ready to order the Trophy spec LR in Red with 0 percent pcp until he said "We would have to wait 16 weeks......
might be less"
Now, it is one of my biggest failings (of which I have many) but patience has never been one of my strong points.

They had an XPower (on demo) and yes I had seen it (oh boy had I seen it) on the way in, but I had instantly discounted it.

This was the new me, the sensible me, and I did not want a lairy, shouty, hard riding, baseball cap wearing, land based missile thankyou very much. Until..............

I asked if we could take it out for a drive? Purely to discount it of course, as I am pretty sure that I won't have made it to the first roundabout before bringing it back because it was too stiff or crashy etc.

We were gone another half an hour!

Now, I am not easily seduced by speed and power in a car, since I discovered motor bikes in 2015, but before finding bikes I have been lucky enough to own many fast cars Escort Cossie, M3, Mini GP, M5, couple of RS4's, VXR8, VXR500, E63 AMG, to name but a few, in bikes Yamaha R1 and MT10, Ducatti 1299 Panigale, Aprillia Tuono Factory V4....
My current steed is a Kawasaki Ninja1000SX.

I promise you, I am not boasting about how lucky I have been, just trying to give some context to how so very, very, fast the XPower is.
But it's not just fast, the handling is just so well judged for UK roads it blew us away.
That looks weird " blew us away" but we were, just...... blown away!! 🤣🤣🤣

In the real world, where most of us live, where we are not all driving at 10 tenths, and trying to eke out the last 0.2 seconds per lap this car is devastating.

But......... You can also drive it normally.
(Which to be honest is how I proceed 99.9 percent of the time) ((No honest))

I saw 4.0 miles per kilowatt on my round trip to Aberystwyth last month and that included several mind bending, incredibly fast, but safe, overtakes.
(And now knowing the car better, 1500 miles in, I reckon I can see that improve next time)

Time Exposed To Danger. (T.E.T.D)
This is the first car that I've ever driven that reduces T.E.T.D whilst overtaking.
It feels very much like a fast motorbike.

We went back to the dealer and unbeknownst to me while I was in the loo my wife had pretty much done a deal behind my back, but told Ryan (my dealer) to let me come to a conclusion by myself. (A very clever, if not a bit sneaky cow🤣)

So I asked how many miles had it done?
196.
How long had they had it?
2 weeks.
And I could buy it right here, right now, today?
Yes.
It's a used car now, so can I have a discount?
Of course.
Where do I sign?
My wife burst out laughing! (I now know why!)
I have a Defence Discount Card for ex forces (amongst others) and could have used a company called Motorfinity to get a bit of a discount on a car, but got the car for £34,995 so was over the moon to be honest. (Yes I know it's 33k now. Grrr)

I really did not expect to see a penny off the price of the car, with it being so new to market, so hats off to my dealer for doing me a deal that we were very happy with.

Now......the hum (more like a gentle vibe, like a change of surface if you will)
Yes we have it, and if all you do is motorway work then this "might" become an issue for you.
I have tuned it out but I only do short trips, 16 mile round trips to St Clears, twice a week, 26 miles roundtrip to Carmarthen, Once a week, 40 mile roundtrip to Haverfordwest once a week.

Any other trips out, I always use A and B roads where possible, of which there are many plentiful and excellent roads in my part of the world.

The infotainment speed is no better or worse (in lag) than the Audi but far superior where amount and depth of information is concerned.

The MG App is excellent and it will be a real boon being able to preheat the car in the colder months before getting into it.
I do have one recurring issue at the moment which is that the reverse camera picture is intermittently going blue.

I turn off the Lane Keep Assist every time.(now)

Probably works very well in China where all the roads are well lit and well painted (road markings) and on the whole, straight?

I really miss my electric boot but that's because I have become old and wizened.

This car has brought back my love of driving.
I had really given up with a series of large, heavy, inefficient suvs (petrol and electric) and dull and unexciting hybrids.

I had truly forgotten what it was like to just enjoy the drive instead of just mundanely going from A to B.

Yes, it is a lot less involving physically, without a clutch to press and gears to change but as @Brettus (I think) said in a post somewhere that all seems a bit quaint now, and it does to me as well.

I look forward to going out in the XPower every time.
The actual driving experience never dissapoints.
The business of going, turning and stopping is just so much fun "when" you want it to be, and quiet, calm and efficient when you don't.

We wanted to become greener and more efficient by buying electric and we also wanted another "back up" to powering our house (Completly off grid Solar)

The real point though, is that just because we may be getting on a bit now, who says us older folk still can't have a little bit of fun now and again eh?

Cant agree with you more, as a 65 year old (going on 12 according to my wife) the fun never stops! Plus the zimmer fits in the boot…….hopefully!
Excellent write up by the way 👍

Thanks M8
Much appreciated 👍

Zimmer won't fit unless you fold down the rear seats, I've checked🤣🤣🤣

Once again, I am having a mid life crisis (now 71!). I too bought an XPower after a 20 minute test drive. It is as much fun to drive as some previous cars (Honda Civic Type R, Lotus Elise), but I can get in and out of this one!

Just had a weekend in Looe with the Mrs, I work in Torpoint so ran out from there, the drive was amazing on the Cornish roads and through the lanes, I've only done 150 miles tops so far but Gert Mint stuck to the road like glue. Here is Gert Mint(bottom right) enjoying the sunrise from the hotel this morning😁

As soon as EVs started coming out I was hoping for a hatchback that behaved like a car on Playstation. From what I read it was finally possible. I already drive a Golf GTI so waited patiently for VW to make a hot electric version. After 4-5 years of waiting they gave the world the ID.3. And more recently announced what looks like a warm e-hatch to be launched in 2028. Well, with brand imagination like that who needs loyalty? When reports of the Mulan began coming out of China two or so years ago I had a feeling this might be it. One brief test drive in August told me it was.

I might add that as a consumer I find good value more interesting than quality at any price. In that sense MG have done exactly what I wanted.

I've come from a Golf GTi too. At the end of March it was pronounced written off as the result of an idiot BMW coming out of a side street and hitting me. I admit I was salivating a bit over the early rumours of the X-Power but since the GTi was only MOTed until 23rd November (it was still driveable but would have failed on account of the bodywork damage leaving a sharp edge) I thought I couldn't afford to hang on for it. (I also said a few things about not wanting to be MG's beta-tester for a brand new model.)

I'm pretty happy with my SE SR and it doesn't feel that much slower than the GTi. I guess I could have waited for the X-Power after all as I don't hear people screaming about oil leaks, undertrays and being locked in, but it would have been pushing the boat out a bit financially.

I'm still occasionally tempted and who knows, but I really like the SE configuration and the LFP battery. Maybe if they brought out an SE X-Power with an LFP battery, I'd go for it!

We now have the Xpower, EX30 and Smart #1 Brabus as options. All Chinese of course and the latter two based on the same Geely underpinnings. Won't be long before the 'segment' (I always thought that was chocolate oranges at Christmas) fills out with further alternatives.

It feels like a small revolution and something in which an American composer would find inspiration. Hyperhatch for the Common Man, anyone?

Having owned, driven and loved a few Golf R's over the the last 13 years I have always liked the combination of AWD and the VW DSG gearbox (plus the performance of course). When the Golf R Mk 8 came out it seemed a tad expensive for me and at over £40,000 the price and vehicle tax bracket also put me off a bit for the lowish mileage I now do.

When I saw that MG4 were producing the Xpower I wanted a test drive asap and got this on 21st July. I was mainly interested in the ride and handling as the performance was obviously there !). The test drive went really well and it felt much like an electric Golf R to me - planted, reasonable ride and good cornering for an EV. I immediately put a deposit down and the rest is history.

So far, after 2 weeks of ownership I am loving it.

I have owned all sorts of cars over the years switching between sensible/affordable and fun.

First car was a Vauxhall Chevette which taught me more than I ever wanted to know about engine bay electrics as they were always failing.

Cheapest fun car to drive was a first generation Ford Ka as the skinny tyres meant you could "power" slide it even with the lack of power.

Went through a phase of soft tops with a Fiat Barchetta and the wife owning an MX5 Mk II and Mk III

Then all the practical cars for grandchildren car seats, Toyota Verso and Skoda Roomster

Last car was a Mini Clubman Cooper S and that has been the car I have owned for the longest amount of time 6 years.

I had been looking for something that could better the Clubman and found the JCW and BMW 135 too clinical. I test drove the Cupra Formentor with the 300hp engine and was seriously thinking about one but Cupra just kept pushing the price to over £40k which immediately adds £2k in road tax (unless you want an out of warranty model that was just under the threshold).

Then MG announced the Extended range and the Xpower MG4 and it was a battle of heart and head, so I went to a dealer to ask for a back to back test drive of the 2 specs. First dealer said they would not have those 2 specs as test cars but I could back to back the Xpower with a Trophy LR and it would be the same thing. Not sure how a Trophy LR and ER will drive exactly the same as they weigh different amounts.

Anyway finally found a dealer who did allow the back to back test drive. The ER was a nice drive but compared to the Mini I found it leaned a bit too much in the corners. Then the Xpower, the noticeably firmer suspension and the rocket ship acceleration did it for me, straight off to the company website and signed up for an Xpower on the salary sacrifice scheme. Now just have to wait for delivery.

Have to say I never understood the Xpower being called a hot hatch as there are not many hot hatches that can reach 60mph in under 4 seconds. Just look at all the 0-60 times for a Golf GTI over the years I thought that was the industry standard for a hot hatch, the Xpower leaves a 2023 GTI with a 0-60 of just over 6 seconds for dust.

Interesting to hear that it compares favourably to a Golf R, what would you say are the pros and cons vs the Golf?

Well the Golf R's were the Mk 6, the Mk 7 and then the 7.5. The Mk 7/7.5 Golf were quite an improvement on the Mk 6 IMHO so I will compare with that.

Pros for the Xpower are :-

  • much better value to buy
  • cheaper to run apart from insurance
  • instant torque and power at all times
  • a lot more standard spec
  • faster

Pros for the Golf are :-

  • Better sounding of course !
  • Slightly better build and interior quality in Mk 7 form (but not the new Mk 8) IMHO
  • cheaper to insure
  • brand name and resell value
  • More customisable with options (alloys / sunshine roof etc) but at a cost !

To drive they both feel totally planted to the road with great traction to "gun" out of roundabouts / corners etc. with no wheelspin. I haven't done a great deal of driving in the XPower yet but it feels quite similar in many respects to the Golf R. I'm not a badge snob so it doesn't bother me when some people I know (petrolheads) question the brand / origin of the MG ! All I can say to them is try one before you turn your nose up at it 😁

You shouldn't have to wait long, I had one on order from Tusker as they had a 30-week lead time for a factory order. they called within two weeks to advise my car was ready for delivery.
I unfortunately had to cancel the order as I was expecting delivery to be well into the new year and I still have a car on a current lease.

I’ve just placed an order for an Xpower through Tusker, but my current Peugeot 2008 lease doesn’t end until April next year.

Like you I’ve ordered now because the lead time shows as 30 weeks. Will be interesting to see what happens. As far as I understand it, if the car arrives early it just sits there until my current lease ends?
