MG5 motor fault - is this common?

I purchased a 2022, low mileage MG5 on Saturday 11 October.

After only a few days' use, the electric motor cut out without warning immediately after I had pulled out of my drive onto the road, with the dash displaying the message "Motor fault". After maybe 10 seconds this message changed to "system fault", followed almost immediately afterwards by "HV battery shut-off".

I did manage to get the car going again by locking and unlocking it 5 times, but the message displayed this time was "power limited, limiting speed" and the maximum speed the car would travel was about 20mph. I made it as far as the next street before the motor cut out again.

I have no wish to name and shame the supplying dealer, who have handled the situation very well and offered a full refund. However, they said that if the fault is "what they think it is", a repair is likely to take several months.

Has anyone else come across this? Have I just been very unlucky or should I be put off from buying another example of the same car?

You were just unlucky, take the refund and buy the same again.

Take the refund and buy from a reputable source. MG dealership is probably best but you will pay over the odds but it will be worth it. The MG5 is probably the most reliable of the MG range. You have been unlucky but has the garage fully checked the car before selling?
I bought mine from a reputable Ford garage - just make sure the garage has a good reputation.

You've just been very unlucky. Buy the same again as this car is an absolute bargain at current used prices.

Problem is the symptoms could come from different issues.
My first MG5 had the same symptoms, car cut out on me as I was leaving my drive, thankfully not on a busy road because it literally stopped dead. Cleared it and later on the car would not start, with HV battery fault etc. turned out to be the charging port had corrosion in it and the high resistance made the car think there was a problem with the HV system. One new charge port later the car was fine and stayed that way till an HGV remodelled it
