Hi everyone, I am from Kathmandu, Nepal and I am an owner of MGS5 base variant. I have driven the car for more than 1000 km and I noticed an issue with the door safety. Even when the car is running at high speed, the door can be opened by pulling the lever once. In the previous cars I owned, we needed to pull the lever twice to open when the car is in motion. This is a high risk for me since I drive the car with my baby in the back seat and I'm afraid they might play with the lever and the door might accidentally open in high speed. Has anyone else faced the same issue?

Amar. Surely your rear doors can be locked, either with child locks on the rear doors. Or from your switches on your drivers door. Especially on such a new car. 🙂👍

Thank you! I am using the child lock for now. However the normal locking mechanism is useless since we can unlock the car while in motion even with a single pull.

It makes a locking sound after 15 km/h speed, but we can still open the door (including driver door) in a single pull. I tried manually locking the door but same issue.

Yes … this is a huge problem…. I too own an MG S5 in Nepal. When the car is above 15 km/hr the door auto locks but that’s effective for opening from outside only. You can’t open the car from outside when locked but you can open the door from inside with a single pull of the lever even if the car is in motion….. that’s a big safety hazard specially when traveling with children. Any solutions for this?

I have turned the child safety on as suggested in this thread. That has solved the issue for now. I've noticed all other EVs in Nepal open the door when pulling the lever twice, but MG has implemented it incorrectly. I hope MG Nepal comes up with an update to fix it soon.

Im pretty sure that my rear doors are not able to be opened from the inside when they are locked.

Neither with a single, nor a double pull on the handle inside..

I need to verify this next time im out for a drive to be certain tho, but i had some mates being unnable to exit the vehicle the other day because it was locked, and as soon as i opened the doors with the control from driver seat, they were able to get out. Might be childs lock that is enabled (?)
Edit: so this was false. Im able to open the doors when stopped. Not sure why i experienced the opposite the first time i had passengers in the back.

I don't think this dangerous, use the child locks if you don't want the doors to open from the inside.

Hi!

I just bought MG S5 last week and found the same safety lapse.

Any solution from MG so far?
I mean, the solution is using the child lock.
The doors locking above 15kmh is for preventing people outside the car opening the doors at intersections and such, its not a safety measure for the passengers. But child lock is.

Doesn't that mean I'll have to go out and open the door from outside everytime there's someone in the rear seat?

I don't want to be stuck in the car after a crash and if the battery fails.
So opening the car is no problem. Just use child's lock. And teach your child not to touch the lever.

Yes.

It is not a safety lapse. Car doors that can be opened from the inside after locking is a normal, and often mandatory, safety and security feature designed to prevent theft and injury. Front doors are typically always operable from the inside, while rear doors have a separate child safety lock feature that, when engaged, prevents them from being opened from the inside. If you find a door won't open from the inside even when unlocked, the issue could be a faulty door latch or a broken actuator, which requires mechanical attention.

What is up with MGS5 owners in Nepal? As others have said above - there is NO safety lapse in the MGS5 doors.

Here is why we all should WANT simple to operate manual door handles in EVs . . . the alternative is disastrous.

I agree electrical doors are so more dangerous than a mechanical lock. If there is an emergency I want my passengers and myself to get out in seconds.
