MGS5 safety software fault - recall level problem? (reverse after hard stop; merged)

It deffo needn't be an emergency stop. If I had to define it, I'd say "sufficient for a shopping bag on a seat to distribute two or three items on the floor." I'm not sure that's an ISO definition, but we know what I mean, right?

And it happens when you (instinctively) take your foot of the brake, in preparation to reapply the accelerator to set off again.

Are you asking whether anyone has looked in the bottom RH corner of the cluster as it happens? In which case the answer is no.

If you mean "what level of regen does OPD offer?", then the answer is, I believe, the same as L3.

There are a couple of vids above, but here is another, done for demonstration, should anyone care.

That's not a particularly bad one. I should have kept one at a zebra, where a youth ran from nowhere in an apparent suicide attempt, the other day. It was much more dramatic. And cost more than a couple of items from the shopping bag.

Just wondering how many people immediatly cross the road behind someone who just emergency breaked :)

The mostly likely situation is someone didn't keep the 2 second gap behind you. Thats a them problem.... Unless they have a dashcam :P
Funny you should mention, someone was about to cross behind me after my vehicle came to a stop near traffic lights. BTW it was nothing like an emergency stop.

It is the RH corner I'm referring to. In OPD mode.

But how strong is the regen in OPD?
I did a test today, I saw the regen go up to 22, but couldn't get the roll back to happen. I was on a slight downhill slope though.
I'm sure I tried it before and had a roll back, no idea what's going on.
I braked hard enough because the wheels locked up.

I today “discovered” a potential very serious safety bug with our 2 week old MGS5 - the joys of being an early adopter.

Steps to recreate this problem:
  1. Drive in OPD mode - get up some speed
  2. Do a hard stop/panic stop with the brake pedal
  3. Come to a full stop then quickly take your foot off the brake - one would expect the auto-hold feature to hold the car in place
  4. Instead the car starts to roll backwards. Actually it was more than roll . .it feels like the car is under power moving backwards as the harder the stop seemed to influence how fast it drove in reverse. The D indicator stays on the entire time - in my final test, done on a flat road, I let the car drive in reverse for 10 meters before stopping it.
  5. Pressing the brake a second time does stop this reverse motion.
I will pop into to my dealer this weekend . . but I would ask that another MGS5 owner tests this bug - clearly on an empty road! In bumper to bumper traffic, this could easily cause an accident.
I have owned my car for a few days now and today I experienced exactly the same fault as you described. Mines wasn't even a hard brake. I was in OPD, same as yourself, I had also to use the brakes at a roundabout and when I lifted my foot of the brake to drive forwards the car went backwards. Certainly gave me a fright, will be looking out for this again in the future and notifying the dealer as it's a serious flaw.

Yep I agree, as others have said requires nothing like an emergency brake, shall we all try and get as many videos as possible if we have dash cams?

I agree it needs a concerted effort from all of us everywhere.
Because it's intermittent, and not readily reproducible. MG and the authorities, may not take any notice of one or two complaints, but if they get a deluge they can hardly ignore it.

Sorry @decrep, but it is reproducible at will. I finally got around to taking the car back to the dealer and was able to demo it for him all over the lot. Then we jumped in his test drive car and I was again able to show him - nearly backing into an expensive Renault at one point. He took videos of it happening, both from inside and outside of my S5. He sent a email confirming all of this . . and then . . nothing.

I've just learned to stay on the brake pedal after a hard stop.

I somehow have the feeling the software og the S5 is similar to the software of the MG4 in the beginning. Several owners reported the same issue.
I know for sure OPD regen was max 25% in the beginning. But after last years service with some updates it dropped to 20% on my mg4. It would not surprise me if current S5's also do 25% regen with OPD only.

It’s not just MG that have a problem with OPD Volvo have issued a warning not to use OPD a quite a few of their EV4 as it can cause brake failures. Also pulled alongside a Mercedes EV as we pulled off the M1 slip road came to a stop and the Mercedes reversed a 12 to18 inches backwards up hill. So it may not just be M G with this problem

A lot of tech comes from the same factory. No surprise to me.
But that does not mean we should accept it.
