I decided to upgrade from my ZS EV face lift to the MGS5 and it arrived and was ready for pick up on 22nd May from W H Brand (Spalding). Excellent, even got the colour I wanted this time. One week later I got a stone hit on the windscreen and, lo and behold, one cracked windscreen. I was seething as you would expect, one week old car, just my luck. So I got onto the insurance and was referred to Autoglass for replacement. Now starts the problem. It seems that MG have brought in some parts but no windscreens. I have been told that they will not arrive until the end of July. I must admit to some surprise that MG UK did not work out that, considering that the UK roads are the worst maintained of all European roads, and stones fly around like bullets, they would need a few windscreen somewhere down the line. Sigh...Ahh well, roll on the end of July......

As long as it doesn't obstruct your vision, you can live with it until the glass arrives. It isn't going to suddenly fail catastrophically.

Disagree. If the windscreen damage would result in an MOT failure (i.e. the crack being greater than 40mm anywhere or 10mm within line-of-sight), that could result in 3 points on your licence and/or a fine.

Worse still if you were involved in an accident and found you were driving a vehicle that would have failed an MOT.

It's quite clearly delineated...

In practice, the annual test will check that items placed in or stuck to the windscreen or surface damage, cracks or discolouration in the windscreen do not seriously obscure the vision of the driver. In order to better define what maybe permissible the windscreen is divided into zones:

  • Zone A is a vertical area 290mm wide, centred on the steering wheel and contained within the swept area of the windscreen (this area is 350mm wide on vehicles over 3.5 tonnes);
  • Zone B is the remainder of the swept area of the windscreen
For simplicity, surface damage, cracks or discolouration, are simply referred to as damage.

In Zone A, a single damaged area shall be contained within a 10mm diameter circle. A combination of minor damage areas shall not seriously restrict the drivers view. Windscreen stickers, or other obstructions, shall not encroach more than 10mm.

In Zone B, a single damaged area shall be contained within a 40mm diameter circle. Windscreen stickers, or other obstructions, shall not encroach more than 40mm.

Windscreen repairs shall be assessed the same as unrepaired damage and shall not restrict the driver’s vision.

Cracks passing through the swept area of the windscreen and reaching two points at the edge shall be deemed to render the windscreen insecure.

I seem to remember something similar when the MG5 first came on the market here, broken windscreen, no replacements in the country. You'd think MG would have learned.
