New thing happened to me today (unnecessary emergency braking)

TBH this is not a new thing really, remember when the “new kid in town” was the crazy stop start function ?.
Intended to save you fuel ️ in traffic ? and reduce thereby improving the economy of the car.
Almost all manufacturers adopted a system that enabled the stop / start system each time you fired up the engine.
If you wanted OFF you had to go into the settings every single time.
The only car that I know that has a physical button on the dash, that you can to turn it off and it will then stay off, is a Fiat 500.
Well, it is on my wife’s 2016 model.
It is STILL on the same original 12 volt battery.
Only likely because we have had the stop / start function turned OFF from day 1.

We had it on the Fiesta and it was fine, It's a shame we PXed it for the MG3, if I had known then what I know now we would never have gone into the dealers, it's the biggest mistake I've made in buying a car in my life.

Not only am I new to Electric Vehicles I'm also new to cars fitted with Drivers assist.
So this is not an EV thing, but I'm now an EV owner so I can mention it here ??

I was driving along a route that I semi regularly use but first time in this car.
As I came up a hill, a road joins from the left and cars merge with the intention to turn right about 40mtrs further on.
It's a fast road, 60 mph and cars join and cross almost immediately.
Today a car pulled in front of me but then immediately moved over to the right to turn right, nothing the driver did impeded my journey because the driver timed it perfectly with my speed and left me room to pass on his left hand side.

EXCEPT my cars collision alert did not understand the other drivers intent and put my brakes on, HARD.
Never before have I had a car put my brakes on at speed like this.
Took me by surprise, I never knew the car had this function so another thing learned ?.

Like I said, not an EV thing just a car assist thing.

I'm also new to electric vehicles and do drive quite frequently on motorways. Having been used to driving diesel automatics in the past and constantly using cruise control without the adaptive setting, I wish I had done more homework before purchasing my MG4 LR. The adaptive cruise control setup is absolutely horrendous. I have had numerous incidents with cars undertaking as they are exiting the motorway via a slip road causing my car to slam on the brakes at motorway speed almost causing complete carnage behind me. It is dangerous beyond belief that this is allowed to be called a "safety" facility. This also happens as I'm passing a car which has been in front of me and has taken the slip road to exit the motorway. The fact that the adaptive setting can't be switched off is extremely surprising to put it mildly. Not everyone needs a computer to tell them when to slow down if they suspect there is danger of a collision when using CC. The other safety features such as LKA I can live with but I'm now terrified to use my CC when sitting on a motorway. Each time a slip road appeared I was bracing myself..! Spoils an otherwise great EV. I've read other posts in the hope that someone explains what I'm doing wrong, for example, do I have to change something in the settings? But can't see anything that will restore my confidence. Such a shame if this is the case. Apologies to MG if I have got this completely wrong..!

Then you are most fortunate or you only use it on dual carriageways or better, try using it in 30 limits.

I switched mine off and hardy ever use it - can't stand the idea of going 50-60-55-65-50-70 mph, all within 5 min just because the car in front speeds and slows down constantly ...

Auto CC is doing what it's supposed to do, slams the brakes if it thinks you are failing to do so. It happened to me twice that it slammed on the brakes when I was driving behind the car turning left without reducing my speed -I can see that I can squeeze past him as he is turning but the car thinks I'm a nutcase and brakes... So it does if someone cuts in front of you - the safe distance is set in the software taking into account unpredictable behaviour of both the driver in front and you.

It really depends on your driving style and calmness (definitely not for me!)

I have adaptive cruise on multiple cars over the years, and despite the fact the LKA and LFA wants you dead and is terrible, the actual adaptive cruise implementation isn’t too bad.

I’d say the phantom braking people are whinging about here is worse on say a Mk7 Golf.

If you know what to expect (primarily the inability to always detect cars slowing to take exits) then it is pretty consistent.

I wouldn’t have a car without it now. Particularly useful in queuing traffic.

I'd rather just have old fashioned CC and look where I'm going as for LKA stupid name and has tried to put us in a ditch more than once so it is turned off ASAP.

I think in ten years time we will have all forgotten how to drive and they will have to add even more of these stupid things, also older none assist cars will be taken off the road as the new ones will talk to each other and old cars will be deaf and dumb and a danger, I'm 75 next and I am glad I probably won't live to see it.
