Apologies if this sounds dumb!

Im looking at getting the IM6 as my company car. I work as a field service engineer so im on the road a lot and carry a lot of equipment (I need the boot space).

I can't find any info on the basic Long Range models "real" range except for what's on EVdatabase

I recently had my very first drive in an EV. VW sent me the ID.7 Tourer pro S (similar range to the IM6). Starting at 98% I travelled from Banbury to Dagenham and back (about 236 miles) with 19% remaining. The range anxiety hit me hard as I frequently checked the battery and mileage. I assume this will pass with experience.

Would the IM6 be suitable for the frequent long trips?

Thanks!

No dumb questions!

I believe that site is usually quite accurate, though I don't know how they have the stats for such a new car - perhaps they are using the data gleaned from it in other countries.

Fair enough. Not too surprising because running out of juice would be a nightmare. But it never happens because you'd get a little top-up before it ran out. Just enough to get you home.

If you live in Banbury that sounds perfect because most of the country is within the range of the car.

If you could charge the car near the site you visit that would be ideal. That might be unlikely for now.

Better than a lot of cars I should think. It charges pretty fast with 800v architecture (if you can find a fast enough charger for it, but there will be more of those installed as time goes on).

It gets a better EV database score for long distance than I've seen on other cars.

On the other hand, it isn't the most efficient so might cost more in electricity than rivals.

I'd say your alternatives would be the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Tesla Model Y, Audi A6, Skoda Enyaq. But those probably don't have as much boot space and probably cost more for smaller slowing charging cars.

You get a lot of car for your money with MG.

How fast do you drive?
How far do you need to drive each day on average?

The biggest factor for motorway range is the speed you drive at. All cars do far better at 65 than 80.

If you are both in a hurry and do daily long distances and can't spare time to charge, then an EV may not be a good fit. Although 99% of people commute less than 50 miles a day (according to UK surveys), there are still a few people for whom the range of an ICE car is a better fit.

The im6 is definitely not the most efficient car out there, if ev database are close to the figures the published (they are not normally wrong)
If range is a real worry there are far more efficient alternatives

From that test the range of the IM6 is superior to the Model Y, efficiency is outweighed by the bigger battery.

It looks like a straight choice between:
  • MY: minimalism, Tesla tech and ecosystem, sporty drive, maximum space and lower costs on long journeys.
  • IM6: comfort, quietness, range, extra screens and stalks, faster charging en route (when available).
Note: the longer MG warranty (7yrs vs 4yrs) isn't nearly as much an advantage in practice due to the long list of exclusions and shorter periods for many items. I'd say they are roughly equivalent.
