So, after wanting to get more info from the car and to track trips, data, SOH, etc, and having used PHEV Watchdog from Daniel Santos for years.

I offered to have me MG5 LR as a test to gather data for him to put into an app for us, so I plugged in one of my OBD II readers to the car, but alas can't connect to the ECU.
So read a few forums and a few pages, found an adapter that 'should work', so I bought that and you guessed it. Not able to connect to the ECU.
I looked harder at posts than before to get one that would actually work, and got a refined type and model. Bought that!
Guess what. That doesn't connect to the ECU either. Does anyone have one that HAS successfully connected to an MG5 ECU please? None of these others work.

I've got two adapters that connect to my MG5LR and populate data in Car Scanner

Which ones Biffo?

It will depend on what app you use as well, has it been set up for the MG5.

The main issue with these obdii dongles is that you have to be within bluetooth range of the vehicle to read them. If you're looking for battery state/charging info you might as well just open the door and look at the dash. The adapters and Torque together can get you battery health, voltage, charge state etc. but not much else as the MG5 just doesn't have the hardware to send it any distance as MG5's in other countries do (I believe).
I tried it for a while but got fed up having to remember to take the dongle out every time I left the car so the alarm wouldn't go off. It was just too much effort for the return.

Ok, so I got the Vgate icar pro adapter and was eager to get going.

Plugged it in, paired, opened Torque pro and slected the new adapter, connected to the adapter but still refuses to see the ECU.

I can't fathom my head round it. Other owners using the same adapter and app got theirs working :unsure:

Presumably you selected MG5 in the app.

I’ve got the same adapter (not sure if there are different versions kicking about though) and it connects on iOS with Car Scanner - not sure if this is available on android, but worth a try in case it's an issue with Torque/configuration and your device, etc.

I was using Torque pro, so dl'd Car Scanner to try. It will see the adapter same as the other apps, but not the ECU again.

The only difference in this whole shit show, is I'm using an Android phone.

Apart from that, I can't see the huge difference on why mine won't connect. I'm pulling my hair out.

Same issues. Tried three now and sits at this, not sure what's up. Does anyone know the exact protocol is using as even though I'm choosing thorough scan maybe selecting the correct one might help.

I just returned my two dongles back to Amazon - although they gave me information on iOS through Car Scanner - they wouldn't link into ABRP, which was really the reason I bought them.

Yeah I returned my vGate to Amazon, this latest one which people said works was from Aliexpress but only a few quid, never know maybe someone will come up with the solution as clearly some people are getting it to work unless they changed the ECU somewhere along the build line.

@NCR any chance you could shed some light on your setup and how you got your dongle to connect to the ECU? Are you on Android or iOS?

Mine were both about £20-£25, car is an LR model arrived early September 2021 - both worked on iOS Car Scanner.

NEXAS NexLink Bluetooth 5.0 OBDII Scanner
Vgate iCar Pro OBD2 Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter

Hi,
I’ve tried both of those on my ZS LR on iOS using Car Scanner - I’ve tried all 3 connection profiles.
Is there anything else you set? It’s connecting to the NEXAS but that’s it. The aim is to get a link for ABRP. Thanks
I assume biffo is talking about his MG5 LR not a ZS as we're in the MG5 forum. Just in case you were getting confused as to why they wouldn't work... ☺️
