I live on the Fylde Coast and changed over to Octopus Energy in January of this year hoping to move onto their "Go Faster" Tariff for overnight charging for 5 hours at 0.055p per kWh and day rate at 0.1399p per kWh.

Some of you may recall my previous posting where I mentioned they installed new SMETS2 Meters back in March which simply haven't been able to communicate since and have worked as dumb meters, so was not able to take advantage of the "GO" or "GO FASTER" Tariffs.

The current price I am paying is their Standard Tariff at 0.1599p per kWh for all units, which can add up saying we have two electric vehicles in the household.

OCTOPUS blamed the connection problem on the lack of signal in our area which turned out to be sheer "Bullsh*t" as I managed to speak to a technical person at the Government Run DCC (Direct Communication Company) who are responsible for supplying the communication or "WAN" between the meters in the home and the Energy Supplier in this case OCTOPUS ENERGY.

The problem we eventually found was that the meters had not been commissioned correctly back in March by the original installer and where not connected to the hub, Octopus didn't follow correct procedures of raising Incident Reports to the DCC and simply didn't connect everything correctly.

Now we are 9 months on and after hours of "ping ponging" emails between the DCC and OCTOPUS ENERGY and our MP, everything is finally up and running and communication at long last with the meters has been established, there was a good signal in the area all the time according to the DCC Technical people, the problem was purely down to OCTOPUS ENERGIES so called Technical people not not wanting to know what was the true cause of the problem.

Now Octopus have offered to change us over from the Standard Tariff to Octopus "GO", BUT the price has now gone up! there evidently is no more "GO FASTER" Tariff and the "GO" Tariff only offers an overnight charging for 4 hours at 0.05p per kWh.

The day rate has now changed from the original 0.1399 per kWh up to 0.24p per kWh which means there is no advantage at all changing over from our current fixed Standard Tariff of 0.1599p per kWh.

I know price rises are on the way, but currently "OCTOPUS GO" EV Charging has become an expensive option.

If OCTOPUS claim your meters can't communicate after installation and their excuse is like ours "they have exhausted all options" persevere and get in touch with the DCC to check the signal for your area as this may be an installation error NOT the DCC Signalling at all.

Andy (Blackpool)

I am in a similar position as you Andy. I'm 11 months since the original install and still no joy. My next engineer appointment is 28/10 but I am not holding my breath (and similar to yourself I am no longer convinced the GO tariff will be of any use to me). I've even been as far as having the Energy Ombudsman involved only to be told that I effectively signed away my rights to decent customer service by accepting the GO beta T&C's.

That’s interesting & concerning. I’m on Go Faster & have just checked that my tariff is still 13.45 during the day & 5.5 for five hours overnight. We started with them on the 19th Jan & have only just got the readings working properly! I’m assuming that I’ll be in for a big increase in Jan 😕

I could be wrong, but I believe it's a 1 year fixed tariff, so it'll hit you next Jan when you come to renew assuming things haven't settled down by then.

Hmm interesting, I was wondering/expecting it would have to go up at some point.

I just checked for my postcode - if I was a new customer:
Unit rate (04:30 - 00:30): 23.77p/ kWh
Unit rate (00:30 - 04:30): 5.00p/ kWh
Standing Charge: 18.01p/ day (Prices include VAT)

On my bill I can see I've got my price locked in until May 2022:
Tariff Name: Octopus Go June 2018
Unit Rate (00:30 - 04:30): 4.76p/kWh
Unit Rate (04:30 - 00:30): 12.81p/kWh
Standing Charge: 23.81p/day (£86.91/year)
Price Guaranteed Until 11th May 2022 (Prices exclude VAT)

Wow, so my [edit!] peak rate will pretty much double next year, great!

Don’t you mean ON PEAK rate, doubling?

Don't lose sight of the fact that new customer rates will be increasing significantly wherever you go.
Octopus will still be in a better position than many because they hedge.

Because of the problems I have had in not being able to connect to the WAN (Wide Access Network) over the past 9 months due to an Octopus Energy installation error and them blaming the DCC for a “no signal situation” when it wasn’t, I have asked Octopus to honour the next twelve months based on last March rates for “Go Faster” and compensation for my many hours of time and losses of sorting this mess out, otherwise it’s the ombudsman which could cost them dearly,

Luckily I am an electrical engineer and have worked in the broadcast industry for over 22 years which helped in understanding the HAN / WAN and Hub operation and communication problems over the past months.

I was able to talk sensibly with the DCC (Direct Communications Company) who went out of their way to get these meters up and running.

It was definitely an Octopus Energy error all these months not a DCC “no signal” problem, Octopus even sent an installer to change the hub in the home for a Cellular Hub with an external aerial.

From Manchester upwards, the system doesn’t even use a Cellular Network to communicate with the home, it uses Long Range Radio, so why send a guy to change the hub to a Cellular one? I had to tell the installer that won’t work in Blackpool - Crazy!

I even spoke with one of Octopus Metering Specialists who was lost in our discussions and talked a load of bullsh*t. He was clearly totally out of his depth.

Will keep you updated what Octopus offers me for their mistakes, but not holding my breath.

I am fixed until February 2022 at .1599p per kWh for all units.

We were moved over to Octopus after Avro energy went bust, I've just took a couple of pictures of the Electric & Gas tariff's, The Avro online site isn't working & no word from Octopus yet about having our account on the Octopus site!!!

I’ve just been contacted by Octopus inviting me onto a new tariff called Intelligent Octopus. They give you 6 hours overnight @ 5pp kWh, but it’s 23pp kWh at other times ….. 🤔

This is an MG forum not Octopus energy. I am with then and mine works perfectly fine from the start. Charge car between 12.30am and 4.30am for 5p a kW

Very restrictive in other ways too.

Interesting tariff… I got Bulb to install a smart meter for me because that seemed the first step, rather than switching and then being stuck until an appointment opened up. Of course now that’s all done, the rates have all shot up.

I’ve now switched to the Bulb EV tariff which is less than 1p/kWh above their standard rate for off peak and then 4p/kWh from 2am until 6am. I think this is the best I can do under the present market circumstances. Fingers crossed they make it through the winter.

Is the Bulb EV tariff like Octopus (ie only requires a smart meter), or is it like others like that require a specific type of EV charger?

Just a smart meter. They ask you how many times a week you charge and if you say 2x or more, they'll let you sign up as far as I can tell. :)

addendum: if your car happens to be compatible with their app, they'll also let you do additional fun things like maybe see the state of charge and schedule the charge from within the Bulb app. But that part is optional!
