Over revving at 70mph

That definitely sounds as though it is an issue and the display shot proves the point - as I think we (certainly you and me!) suspected from the start.

Keep us updated as to how you get on with the dealer/MG. Point them towards this thread as well!

Thanks. I have done a bit of research on Parallel and Series Hybrid set ups.
I agree, very clever. But do other HS PHEV owners experience such high RPM's at cruising speeds?
I could live with the engine firing up at 2000rpm to charge the battery, which would be far less intrusive than thrashing away in the background at 4000rpm for over an hour.
i have just bought one 4 days ago and your correct that reving at 4000k is very noisy has any one found a way to fix this

Quick update.

The below is a email response from MG UK.
I would love to know if anyone else experiences this, so I can put my mind at rest.


Once the EV battery has been depleted past 90% the engine can decide to put power back into the EV battery to extend the range and so the revs can jump to 3800 to charge the EV battery.
Two week old HS PHEV. We tested it out in EV mode and drove it until the battery ran out. At the 10% point there was no engine activity at all. The engine didn't cut in until 81.2 miles, when the battery was zero percent. At no time did it rise near 4000 revs, so I would regard your car as faulty.

When the car goes above a certain speed, the engine revs drop down considerably, so a second gear is definitely kicking in.

Running-in
The engine, transmission, brakes and tyres need time to
'bed-in' and adjust to the demands of everyday motoring.
During the first 1500 km, please heed the following advice
so as to enhance the long-term operation performance of
the vehicle:
Do not allow the engine to exceed 3000 rpm in any gear
or the vehicle speed to exceed 120 km/h.

• Do not operate at full throttle or allow the engine to
labour in any gear.
• Do not drive at a constant speed (either high speed or
low speed).
• Avoid heavy braking where possible.
After 1500 km, engine speeds can be gradually increased.
 
Mine hasn't been at 4000rpm, personally if it got anywhere close to that I'd slow down until it changed up. Maybe try switching out of sport mode and see if that alters it?

I am starting to believe this is ECU/software related.
Today I have made a 75 mile trip over to the east coast.
On the motorway cruising at 70mph.
My car was behaving exactly as you describe above.
After 30 miles the engine increased to 3800rpm, still driving on a level road.
It remained like this for over 30 minutes until I could nt take the noise any more. The graphic was showing full ICE power to the wheels.
I pulled over, turned off the car and waited a couple of minutes before turning back on.
The car behaved itself for the rest of the journey. Something, whether it be software or the gearbox is stopping the car from going into the higher gear, end of !!!

Dean how do you get the rpm showing mines say mph . Or is this specific to the PHEV mines is just the hybrid+.
