Hi all just watching YouTube and it has said there is a very good chance that there will be charge per mile for electric vehicles what next this government is going to make us all bankrupt
We all need to write to the king to disband this government before we go under

I too spend too much time on You Tube. But was this a reputable source?

I would have thought that an extension of congestion and ULEZ-type charging would be more likely.

However, it is an issue for governments (especially in the UK) that there will be a huge loss of revenue from fuel, as noted in (I think) this IFS podcast:


The electricity we generate from our solar panels does not take a form that can be taxed (nor does it go into GDP figures) so it is quite a different kind of economy we are heading towards!
 
They do plan to introduce a charge on EVs here in Australia soon.
In general I agree with addressing the inequity that exists between those paying for fuels with road taxes as a part of their cost.
The thing is that these taxes have always been flawed. The major road damage is caused by heavy vehicles and they do pay a lot more tax, but not enough to cover the damage caused. The taxes paid by passenger cars powered by ICE is more than the damage, but it being on the fuel means that the more you drive the more you pay. This tax does not apply to EV's and I can see how that is not fair.
The EV council here (cannot recall their exact name) agrees that a road tax should be applied, but they point out that it would be better to phase it in when the number of EVs rise. They suggest it should be introduced when the population reaches 30% of passenger cars, and it is about 3% now. This does sound sensible.
If they were to drop the fuel tax and levy and charge all users a fee per km driven there would be quite a few issues. Firstly a drop in fossil fuel prices would delay the electric transition by many years, which would not be the best for carbon emissions. Then it would also be a nightmare to levy on many older cars which have low technology.
Personally I think that the huge sums of tax money currently paid to the fossil fuel companies here should be reduced according to the percentage of EVs and those funds instead put towards road maintenance and charging infrastructure.

Already have it here and rebate on EV's is long gone. I hear road tax on petrol will be dropped at pump and all vehicles will pay road tax. (Give the Police more work checking vehicles= dumb!)
Currently pay NZ$0.07/km. I'm ok with EV road tax, but NOT on kWh solar gen. Thuckin Fieves.

Is your govt now more right wing and not big on carbon reduction?

Who would want to be a cabinet minister! Between rock and hard place, so they take it out on environment like there will be no consequences.
More even distribution of wealth, to improve environmental and humanitarian outcomes should be the goal.

Ridiculous scenarios are becoming so ho hum we have skits about them.

Has anyone any idea how this will be implemented, I doubt this government could think of a cost effective way. Simplistic way would be every car would need to go to an MOT station each year for the Mileage to be read at the MOT station the details submitted to the Gov at the MOT station and then a invoice for payment sent to you-- all done by apps of course to your smart phone-- like paying a toll for a bridge or tunnel. I forgot the £20 fee for the garage time. Nice earner for a garage and it will only be on EVs Cant wait for it to come on line for the EV haters to have a field day of comments There are ways of doing it all depends how keen they are to find the money to do it.

They are always trying to fanny about, with summut. And it'll cost us more, you just know it will. 🙄🤪

Unless of course they make it a penny a mile. Mine will be about 80 quid a year

I don't know of any plans on this.

If it was me I would set a fixed amount representing a certain amount of miles (that medium-low drivers do). Then give a refund to those who do lower milage and request extra money from those who do more.

No-one will have any idea how this will be implemented but I'm sure there will be many guesses as to how it could be implemented. :)
 
Widening the argument a little ... the UK government gives fossil fuel companies significant subsidies to exploit oil fields in the North Sea, so it's only fair to tax fossil fuels at the pump to get back the subsidies. The initial subsidies for EVs are no longer very significant and typical to get a new industry up and running (as in solar panels, domestic heat pumps, etc). Could it be the government targets transport for tax because you have to move round (as in stamp duty on houses coz you need somewhere to live). If you live in a rural area with no public transport you are a very soft target for tax. Then the government complains when people work from home, therefore they should tax you per hour spent at home, just a thought.... 🤪

MOT test data is recorded on line, easy enough to include the mileage when the MOT is performed.
 
But what about the first 2 years? ;)
Either enter it on line yourself or give an estimation of annual mileage as you do on your insurance. After the first MoT you will either get an invoice for the difference or a refund.
 
It's all getting a bit, long winded. Just leave it alone. The only change I'd probably make is perhaps a one off dearer tax for cars over 60 grand, not the current 40. As that would be in the purchase price, you wouldn't notice it.
Then from the second year, same price for everyone. One thing you can be certain of, is whatever they come up with,
it'll cost, us more. 🙄
