Problems with granny lead

Hi guys the granny lead problems the power light is on (not blinking) the charger light is on but it is blinking. Is this problem stopping me from charging the MG4?

You should have a solid light on for power on the granny charger, and I believe the charging light on it will flash when charging.

What colour are the LED lights around the charging port on the car? If they are green, then the car is charging. It will be very slow to charge using the granny charger so may not appear to be doing anything. One of the four LEDS around the charging ports should pulse slowly when charging. Dark blue means charger connected but not charging.

The lights are blue but won’t switch to green.

The charger light is flashing the power is solid and the fault light isn’t on so I’m wondering is that reason for not charging

Have you looked on the back? My MG5 one has a chart telling you what all the light combinations mean.

Have you tried selecting "start charge" from screen in car, or via iSmart app?

Is the car still powered on?

This has happened a couple of times to me recently. Both times it was because the cable hadn't locked in place. An unlock/lock cycle on the car cured the problem both times.

I've had that. I can open the charge flap and connect the cable without unlocking the car but the car won't see that the cable is plugged in until I've unlocked and relocked the car.

Perhaps the flap lock gets stuck in the unlocked state sometimes when the car thinks it is locked, due to a hardware or software bug? It is then the unlock operation which allows it to look for the cable and continue to work normally.

The one thing you can try is to hold the plug pushed in ( have the granny charger powered up ) and keep hold until you hear the plug been lock it. The charge port is high on your car and the weight of the cable may stop the communications pins making contact with socket, this sometimes happen on my HS PHEV also can happen at fast chargers.

we have had a granny charging issue when the temperature has been around -3 to 4 degrees C

As above I'd try plugging in with the car doors unlocked and car turned on following these steps :-
Make sure there is no scheduling set on the app or car ent. screen
Go into the charging menu on the cars ent. screen
Plug in the granny charger and see what happens and what the screen says
Lock the car from outside and see what the drivers screen shows for the first 20 seconds ("charging" or "charging scheduled" or ???? .

After my recent issues I have taken to plugging the car in and starting the charge immediately to make sure it has connected, then using the Tapo (smart plug) to turn it off after 30 minutes ready then to turn it on again for the Go overnight rates, which has worked fine until a couple of nights ago when the night charge didn't start properly, been ok since.

Why do just leave it on then go to the screen and then in to the charging screen and turn on the schedule. You will need to set up your time before hand to turn on the car to charge. I have set up the smart socket be which works over the internet and this has timed on and off so I set the charging and set the socket to come 5 minutes before the car.

Not really sure what you are suggesting, I don't set any schedule in the car/app I just use the smart socket schedule to turn on/off at Go times, use the manual override to check I am properly connected and the separate timer to end the manual test after a short while.

You do the same as me plug in check it working but in stead of resetting the smart plug I use the car system to start the charge and I wake up in the night check on the app it’s charging. I had a few failed charges on MG HS PHEV and had two fails on my present car so I make the car start the charge..

Have you got your granny charger attached to an extension lead? If so it needs to be a heavy duty one. My brother discovered that attaching it to a standard extension lead it would not charge for more than a few minutes.

A lot of standard extension leads especially those on rolls have thermal cut out switches designed to cut the power before the fuse blows. A heavy duty one may also have the same, unroll it all the way if using one.

It’s better to run a heavy good uv protection cable clipped to a fence or wall to a IP 66 out side socket, I used the one I put it to post above which can turn on /off from smart phone or pad.
