Replacement Tyres for Cyberster GT

The car was at the MG dealer. I asked them if it could be repaired, I took them for their word.

As Reagan used to say, "Trust but verify". It may well be the case the puncture was too close to the sidewall, but I don't trust any car dealer further than I can throw them.

Have just heard back from MG, they advised that it’s not recommended to mix speed ratings on an axle and advised to stick with the same speed ratings around the vehicle. Kwik Fit advised it would be OK. Guess I stick with MG advice but not sure what the issue would be

Well if MG can get a 'W', all well and good, but what's the betting they try to sell you 2 new 'Y' rated tyres.

Different tyre limits. As you wont be getting anywhere near the limits of the tyres it can only be down to Torque and Weight on the tyres. If the manufacturer has tested the car at the limits with W speed rating shouldn't be an issue as Y has a stronger and higher rating than W.

Its just if you were driving near the limits of W. 168 mph which is forbidden by the software. Im sure the car can do more than that unlimited lol

Just an update on where I am with my replacement tyre.

Pirelli do not sell the tyres on the Cyberster in the UK ("Unfortunately, the Pirelli tyre fitted as original equipment for the MG Cyberster is currently unavailable. While we are working to make this product available, we do not anticipate stock in the near future.").

The MG dealer fitted a Pirelli P Zero 275/35 R20 MO-S with a Y rating and not an ELEC tyre (a Mercedes optimised tyre). They did not advise me that this was being fitted and I expected a direct replacement (naively assuming MG would have a supply of the original tyre). I have issues with this as not only is the replacement a different rating but also a different compound. After doing some reading I understand that you should not mix tyres (even rating) as it can result in different road grip which manifests in unpredictable handling and potential safety issues.

I am in communication with MG over this issue, but beggars belief how the replacement tyres are not available in the UK. Just flagging this as as it is an issue for all of us and you may wish to raise your concerns with MG directly. Given the situation I believe MG should be importing a stock of the replacement tyres until Pirelli make them available in the UK.

EDIT - This only applies to Cyberster owners in the UK.

Whilst awaiting a reply from MG I have contacted Pirelli. Pirelli advised that ELEC tyres have a different internal structure and compound and are designed to support the additional weight of EVs and they did not recommend mixing with the fitted tyre. This does put UK Cyberster owners in a challenging position.

After raising my concerns about the tyre the dealer has now managed to source the correct tyre and the cost is £782.40. I suspect they are importing. I feel well and truly screwed and taking this up with MG.

For comparison, whilst the Cyberster tyre size is not available, Kwik Fit do the Pirelli P Zero Elect PNCS 275/30 21W (98) fitted at £319.

As wonderful as the Cyberster is I would not recommend buying the car in the UK until the tyres are supplied by Pirelli. You will be at the mercy of your local dealer.

Cheaper To get 2 P zero's fitted on the rear. Keep the good tyre and trade it on here if someone else gets a puncture

I agree that what you suggest is a solution but the tyres will likely wear much quicker and there are other factors including safety. I am not a tyre expert but a cursory search suggests that you should use EV tyres.

The Cyberster is a performance car and I would want the correct tyres on it. Below is an example of a tyre manufacturers explanation of why EV tyres are different.

So disappointing that UK customers are left in this situation. I am hoping that MG will work with Pirelli to resolve asap and provide an interim solution for those of us unfortunate enough to require a tyre replacement.

You would almost certainly be ok, with XL
(extra load) tyres. And tyre manufacturers would tell you it needs super special tyres, wouldn't they? Big money for them.

I guess at the end of the day it comes down to an individual decision. I know for sure that you should not mix the replacement tyre fitted last week with the original on the same axle.

When you read about the rationale for EV tyres it makes sense to me, a big difference between EV and ICE. I have a neighbour who is a senior manager in the car industry and he had concerns with the tyre fitted. He also mentioned that if you are involved in an accident and someone is injured the tyres on the car will invariably be scrutinised.

EVs do put a lot of strain on tyres and having done the background reading I would always opt for a tyre optimised for an EV.

Someone at MG has dropped the ball here and not thought to check that the Cyberster tyres were available in the UK. What disappoints/concerns me is that they tried to fob me off with a tyre that would have impacted on safety.

You're fearing this a little too much, unless you are driving your car at the limits all the time.

Pick a decent premium branded tyre with an XL rating and you'll be fine. Think of all the 2.5 ton + SUV's running around on low profile tyres.

As long as you get a decent brand and not "Linglong" or "Goodride". Chinese cars are great, Chinese tyres are crap.

And personally I'd change all 4 tyres to tyres of my choosing that are readily available and sell the other 3 as spares.

Hey! what's wrong with Linglong.
I've put these on my new 19" alloys for my X Power. (If I ever get round to fitting the bloody things) To be fair though they are probably only temporary, just to make sure the new wheels, fit perfectly. Then will probably swap to Pilot Sport 5s.
Also don't think Chinese tyres, are as bad as folk say, but we'll see.

Haha sorry Salty! No offense intended. But I personally wouldn't fit them to a high performance car, perfectly fine on a runabout but I wouldn't trust them for speed or cornering

When I first mentioned these. Someone said "Linglong and Prosper" which I thought was funny. But I'm now calling them "StarTrek" tyres, which is very appropriate for the X Power, as it has got,
"Warp" Speed.

Yeah but there are higher performance cars than the Cyberster that carry weight near 2000kg or up to 2400 kg that dont have "EV" tyres. Youre not going to be driving like a looney tune.

As mentioned above you can take all off and get all 4 tyres of your choosing. Then list the 3 good ones as spares for Cyberster. The one thats damaged can donate it by leaving it outside or chuck it.

What about a set of MICHELIN CROSSCLIMATE 3 SPORT - Passenger Car - All season tyres tyre | MICHELIN GB

Nearly identical, can be found in the UK for £280 and is designed for EVs.

I’d consider swapping both rears for a set of these and keeping the one good tyre you have left. Then if Pirelli sort themselves out (or if one of us needs a single tyre) you can put it to use.
