Hi
I have a 71 reg pre FL SR MG5. 73k miles to date without issues. Charge on EON next drive with 6.7p overnight via EV Energy app and Rolec EV home smart EV charger. All has been fine until earlier this week when it failed to charge overnight. Had suddenly stopped charging at 1am. Called Rolec (took forever to answer). As out of warranty given number for JML based in Hinckley. I had tried the obvious of switching off at fuse box, resetting app etc. Engineer came round same day. Confirmed charger was fine. Issue was with RCD next to fuse. It was 32A and he said they are being replaced with 40A. This sorted the issue. Unit was £28 plus VAT. Total charge £161 which included call out charge and mileage. Engineer was excellent. Not sure if this is coincidence but my range has gone up from ~200 miles to ~210.

Re the rcd, they can get a bit sensitive as they age (don't we all?) and replacing old 32 for new 32 would probably fix the issue. I'm not a sparkie but I'd be very wary of fitting a 40 amp in place of it, the circuit is designed to be 32A max (assuming you have a 7kW charger?).

Thanks for the info. Yes it's 7kW. He said he'd swapped a lot of 32s for 40s and that 32 was the max it could cope with. That said I'm not technical and know nothing. Just glad it works.

A 7 kW "charger" can draw up to about 32 amps, continuous. So best practice is to have wiring capable of 40 A continuous, protected with an RCBO rated for 40 A.

That's the "80% rule": only draw 80% of the rated circuit capacity if the load is continuous (regularly 30 minutes or more).
