Hi S6 Owners, i was wondering if the car can be access/driven if the key is not on the driver and the car is parked in say, an mall's underground mall with no internet/4G cell signal? Just an interesting question my wife asked and one i havent thought about. TLDR : Do you need internet to access/drive the car using just the phone?

If the car is already on, you can drive it without the key. As for the phone thing, I'm not sure, as I haven't set up my phone as a key, and never will do!
But afaik, it uses Bluetooth to communicate the decryption code, so I don't think Internet access is needed.

Pretty sure you have to have the physical key to get the car in drive mode.

You can (and I do) unlock and lock the doors, initialise internal temperatures from the phone but that's pretty much it.

Lot of contention about security these days with the capability to clone a security signal which is one of the reasons didn't go down the route of doors unlocking as you approach them with the key in your pocket like other manufacturers have.

i see, all this is extremely new to me and my family so thank you and also in advance for all the questions. we started discussing about pre-cooling the car from the phone, but dont believe you can do that if the car doesnt have cell reception (like in a mall). Btw my dealer did mention the that data is free for 3 years here. after which I have to pony up for continued access, and no i cannot use my own SIM or eSIM. Which led us to the question above.

Not sure about having to pay for data after 3 years, never heard anything like that in the UK or from anyone else on the forum for any MG... I used to have another MG and data was free for iSmart app for more than 4 years...
For iSmart to work, the car needs to be in a good signal area.

I have my digital key setup on my phone and can confirm that my key was nowhere near me when I got to my destination. Luckily the digital key worked to unlock and start the car and I got back home.
Each time I've been back to hospital or somewhere I need to be changed, and don't want to have keys and phone with me, I use the digital key via my phone and leave the actual key behind.

Whether it works where there is no sign, that I can't answer but my experiment with some help.

So how did you set up the digital key? Is it part of the app? Does opening the door with the app let you drive the car?

It's all in the app. You can unlock the doors, then hit the digital key bit, once you see 'success' on the screen, put your foot on the brake and it's all the same as having the actual key with you.

Start here..

Then you get to this...

Press the pic/VIN and you get here..

Once you press that (assuming the phone and car are connected) you should get the 'success' message. Then put your foot on the brake.

I've found it doesn't work if your foot is on the break before doing these steps.

Anytime. You can also share via the app - so my son has downloaded the app and he can open the car (but can't start it) if he needs to get in, warm up and wait for me.
