To the forum. Pretty sure you will, the MG4 is a good car. Enjoy. 🙂👍

Hi all, new to this forum, although on loads of others!
I have just ordered an MGS5 which the dealer informed me is now in the country & being registered today. Its replacing a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV so used to plug in Hybrids but I've only ever charged the Mitzy away from home twice in nearly 4 years.
Expect zillions of questions, I have no home charger at the moment. I have an external 13 amp socket which the Mitzy is plugged into permanently when not in use. I have just ordered a 13 amp lead from Amazon in preparation for the car arriving which will be second week of October.

Welcome to the forum.
Wait for the comments about using a granny EVSE on a 13A socket.

What got me on to a Zappi was wanting to charge more quickly and (especially) wanting to make best use of a cheap overnight tariff. Not any safety concerns. I could charge on the granny plug for 24 hours and it still wouldn't even be warm.

That may force my hand to get a proper charger installed as well. Currently trying to do the maths on the myriad suppliers, to see which is best.

I am a part qualified Sparks so currently (sorry!) the Mitzy is on a long extension lead from the house. All made using good quality bits. The Dura Plug gets a bit warm @ 10Amps (which is the Max the Mitzy does) but is OK over 4 years.

I waited for a year so that I had some idea what I was doing. Electricity was about 30p/unit but I was prepared to swallow that. The issue of long charging times was solved by the presence of a 50 kw charger five minutes walk away which was also 30p/unit at the time. So I would give the car up to its time limit on that charger, then move it to the granny to get to 100% and balance. It was fine.

But then they increased the price of that charger to 60p/unit and I wasn't paying that. And I had one day when I was driving so much I was struggling to keep up with myself on the granny. And I began to hanker for the Octopus 7.5p/unit overnight rate, but knew that six hours of that wouldn't really be enough on the granny sometimes.

So. My neighbours in an identical (mirror-image) house had a full solar panel installation put in just about the time I got my car. He is an engineer, so I thought that if he had done all the legwork with the myriad suppliers, I'd take advantage of that. I asked him if he was happy with his installation and his supplier, and if so, who was it? He said he was, and five weeks later I had an identical set-up. 18 panels, inverter, home battery and Zappi. I made about £350 from solar export in the first year, after running the house and charging the car. Octopus pay me, rather than the other way round.

Car collected Monday, today I have been installing a waterproof box near my outside 13A socket to take the charger I got from Amazon. Unfortunately rain stopped play outside. So sat in the car & started installing the dashcam. The chinglish instructions defeated me, so I decamped indoors and connected the dashcam to my laptop & sorted it out there, short USB A to mini USB cable ordered from Amazon for tomorrow, so will have another go.

Outside charger installed. Wiring a 13Amp mains plug to 2.5mm tough rubber cable in the cold was a PITA! But its done now and tested. Charger I bought from Amazon was this one. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DLNR61P1
Very impressed, it is now in a wallbox to A. protect it & B. stop anyone nicking it. I chopped off the 13Amp plug, threaded it through a gland & wired it to a new 13Amp plug. Quite chilly in Chatham & wiring 2.5mm on tough rubber cable to a BS1363 meant lots of naughty words, but it looks neat, so I am happy.
If this keeps me happy through the winter I'll stick with it and maybe rewire the outside socket to a 16Amp commando for A. Peace of mind & B. the full 3kW. Although the 3 pin plug & socket survived 4 years with the PHEV.
