Say Hello

Hi Ladies & Gents,

As a committed petrolhead.
I said I'd never be an EV owner. I figured that I'd probably be worm food before they became mandatory?
But here I am. The proud owner of a brand new MG HS Trophy PHEV in shiny red metallic! 🤗

It's extremely weird, but in a very nice way! It goes like stink (for a lardy SUV) & it's super comfy 🙂

Hopefully we can swap info, & my decision to go partly electric wasn't a mistake? 🤔

Welcome to the forum from another thread
We started out with hybrid in 2014, an ex taxi '08 Gen2 Prius, cost just short of $2,000AUD and had over 600,000kms on the clock. My plan was to experiment with it to try to learn about EV drive units, it was still going up until 12mths ago when I needed front brake pads on a long weekend for the '06 Gen2 I bought after it. That is still the drive hack for picking stuff up and when the wife takes our friend and his dog for the afternoon walks, a Jack Russell that has no sense of car interior preservation
The ex taxi '08 had well over 780,000kms on the clock when it started getting plundered for parts ..... it still went like sh*tte of a shovel, but when we bought the MG4 51, we fully understood the term "That EV Grin"

Having spent over 60 yrs in the mechanic industry, 12 of them as owner of a high performance dyno tuning workshop, I thought I knew what quick off the mark was all about, but the effortless performance of this poverty pack MG4 EV is just so smooth and constant .... until the computer cuts in and says that's enough anyway  Turn 71 soon, so that's a good thing ... sort of, you never grow too old for good performance.
Would love to own an XPower, but for the few hrs my licence would last, I doubt that will ever happen.

There's a nice teal green one here that's very tempting, but the sense circuit keeps cutting in, before I can put any money down.

I just received the first speeding ticket I've had in years, not concentrating on my speed in the my poverty pack MG4. You'd have to take your foot of real quick in an xpower not to go over off the lights

Welcome and Hi,
In life I've found it's good to have an open mind about stuff. That way you don't deprive yourself of great experiences.
There is a bit of a divide here between BEVs and hybrids, don't worry about it, you've just started the journey.

I made the transition to EV's a few years ago starting with a Mini Countryman PHEV to get some idea of what electric was all about, after a couple of enjoyable years went full eclectic with an MG4 xpower, now on my second MG switching to an S6 in January, would not go back to ICE for our main car, just you wait and see, in the meantime enjoy the new wheels.

Welcome - where in Northants are you?
I didn't take the Hybrid stepping stone, just went straight to full electric and as many others have said, I'll never go back. I still have other vehicles here (two for the farm and my old Allroad) so have a great way to compare how much better electric is to ICE.
I swore I'd never do it, but now I have I wish I'd done it sooner!

Happened to me too.

Well, in my opinion it was a mistake! You've got something with a small battery that's going to take a lot of heavy use, and an ICE as well that may not like not being used much. You're carrying around two power trains when you only need one, and you have a lot of complications with the integration of the two.

That's what I said to my neighbour when he told me he was going to do the same thing, but look what's sitting outside his house as I type.

It seems to be a phase some people have to go through. Eventually you'll realise the main problem is that your battery needs to be a lot bigger, and then you won't need the ICE at all...

I admire anyone who goes down the EV or partial EV. It works for some.
In my opinion however you might as well get a full EV. As @Rolfe points out you're not moving around that extra weight and power train in case you run out of charge.
I went straight from an Eco Diesel, to EV. Having test driven the MG4 I couldn't see how I'd go back to ICE. I saw what was happening with legislation and targets, and steadily its been getting tougher especially for diesel.
Nearly convinced a friend to get one too, got as far a test drive and was impressed, then decided in the end with a petrol.......at least one step away from diesel anyway. They said when they've sorted out all the issues and technology.... so probably next car in four years.
The fact is there'll never be the ultimate EV, 100 years of petrol power evolution proves that.
@Biker67 use your PHEV as a stepping stone, you're going in the right direction, and for short journeys/ commutes there are significant advantages over ICE, which it will probably never use, and when you next change you'll be ready to take the last step....if you like the leap of faith.

As I'm sure you're aware
From April 2028 the government plan to charge EV owners 3p per mile on top of standard road tax (1.5p for PHEV's)
And all of that is on top of the fact that EV's used to get completely free road tax.
Consequently, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that as the income from fuel duty drops. EV/PHEV owners will be penalised even more.
And undoubtedly the ones worse hit will be full EV's who aren't contributing anything via the fuel pumps. Obviously, all of that is totally out of order! But sadly it's also inevitable. Fuel duty currently raises billions of pounds every year. And when push comes to shove, money is even more important to our government than the green agenda

BTW ..
I haven't gone down the partly EV route to save the planet. Because TBH, I think that's BS.
The same goes for the ULEZ zones. If they were genuinely about air quality, not profit.
There'd be a total ban on ICE vehicles.
Folk wouldn't be allowed to ruin the air quality as long as they pay to do so.

My car will still be much cheaper even if they do bring in that 3p thing, which there's no guarantee that they will. At the moment it's costing me 1p/mile. It's a dream to drive and it costs peanuts to run and it's absolutely fine on long trips. What's not to like?

Governments are all bastards, and you can't beat them whatever you do.

100% 👍
As I said mate. The entire thing is totally out of order.
Many years ago we were encouraged to purchase diesel cars. Then when many of us did so. All of a sudden diesel became more expensive than petrol. Which was never the case prior to a big take-up of diesel ownership.
But IMHO that pales into insignificance compared to the betrayal of EV owners.
Especially those that were the first adopters of EV tech. They paid through the nose for their vehicles But had the (small) kickback of free road tax.
Then the government pulled the rug on that. And from April 2028, we could be getting another kick in the spuds?!? 🙄

I'll do so few miles per year in my HS it really won't matter. But anyone doing 10k+ per year might live to regret owning an EV/PHEV? 🤔

I guess, it all depends if your filling up from a public charger or at home from very cheap rates, or your solar panels.
Like @Rolfe we run at $0.07/kWh, that's what we'd be getting paid for our export if it didn't charge the car. They'll bring in a road tax here as well eventually.
We don't know if it will replace fuel excise, and apply equally to all vehicles on a weight bases, or if there'll be two separate systems. We all use the roads should be prepared to pay our share.

Hi @decrep,

My HS came with a charging lead for a 7kw wall charger. But in the UK the purchase of such a charger isn't far short of £1000. That would take me decades to recoup.
So I purchased a 2kw home charger (often referred to as a Granny charger)
According to the App from my energy company. 70 miles of charge costs me approximately £4.
And on my current tariff I don't get cheap rate electricity at any time.
But I'm fine with that, as £4 for 70 miles compared with our current fuel prices is fantastic! Plus TBH, mpg doesn't really figure on my radar full stop 🙂

Totally agree! Motorists have always been easy money cash cows. Now they are cottoning on to EVs. As Rolfe says, "Bastards!" 🤬🤪

100% @salty,

I'm going into semi EV ownership with my eyes wide open. Knowing full well that I'll be subject to all the usual underhanded taxation that every motorist is.
But if I was one of the first purchasers of an EV. I'd be absolutely fuming now!
I remember reading about the zero road tax & the governments push to get us all out of ICE vehicles. And chuckling to myself about how long that would last.
A mate of mine back then purchased a Nissan Leaf for his wife. And apparently I was a conspiracy theorist for my opinion about what would eventually happen?
I don't refer back to that conversation now, in an attempt to maintain our friendship 😉

There are others too that use a Granny Charger to charge at home, either because as you say milage/ savings against cost of EVSE and install just don't add up for them. Others cannot because they don't own the property.
I'm not on a EV tariff, and with mainly home charging and a bit of 7kw public charging mine is costing me around 10p per mile.(£79 gets me 800 miles) good value to what I thought was economical running the diesel at 15p per mile 3 years ago.....and now with diesel now up to £1.90 /litre and at 50 MPG that would cost about £138 for the same distance.

Talking of public charging points. I had a hospital appointment last Saturday. And I noticed they had EV charging points in disabled parking bays.
But I couldn't see anyway to make payment?
Is there such a thing as free public charging?

Would be nice, but doubt it. Hospitals can be worse than council's. 🙄
