Software update

Just spoken with Service Manager and he is saying no R25 infotainment version on the system. He agreed with that the Sales Managers car has R25 but can't get the software from the MG system as it says it doesnt exist. He is sending screenshots to MG technical to hopefully get them to send the patch file.

From what I can see it looks like MG are really not good at software version control and any hopes of OTA are very slim for the future! Think I will just have to accept the version it is on and put up with the glitches which are mainly around Apple CarPlay.

It may be that R25 is not ready for release yet, put out to a few cars as beta testing.

Couple of people in here say they have it, I suspect it is build date as mine is 30th March the Sales Manager is 20th April.

What I do know is my R22 version does not connect reliably to Apple car play wirelessly. I will see what he says tomorrow if it isn't out I guess I just have to put up with it and probably be charged to update it in a years time. Why it can't be like Hyundai where I just downloaded the file from their website, put it on a usb and then in car and walked away. Map updates and infotainment usually twice a year free of charge.

Makes you realise why Tesla do so well, they really have the OTA stuff properly sorted and update vehicles regularly with new features. I have no hope of any new features over the next 4 years of my PCP and suspect I won't even get bug fixes.

I’ve definitely got R25. Not sure how you find out the build date though

It was on a shipping sheet in the glove box in my car.

Is yours a Trophy or an SE as that was the other thing he tried to say that they were different, I don't think so myself.
Mine is a Trophy. I’ll try to see if I can find the shipping sheet with the build date tomorrow.

thanks, would be interesting to see if it is after the 30th March.

My brother-in-law has a VW Tiguan that had an over the air update last month and is bricked and VW can't get a replacement module until November! Maybe I should just ask them to leave well alone and block any future updates - may be safer!

I listened to an interesting podcast this week from Everything Electric with the CEO of Rivian. He explained how there are so many 'computer control' units with different software from different vendors that car software is a nightmare. He admitted if he had his way it would be a single unit with his company writing software but as they use so many suppliers in the supply chain it isn't possible. I guess this is where Tesla have it easier.

The only thing I could find was the certificate of conformity which I assume is what you were referring to. And it’s dated 30th of March

My UK S5 has R25 and a tech told me today that it is the latest version.

I spoke with the service manager this morning, my vehicle has been updated on all modules that were available but still did not show R25 for the Infotainment. He received a patch file from MG, it seems they tightly control what is given to dealers particularly patches vs what the system shows, and he is applying it this afternoon. Time will tell if that is indeed R25.

In the meantime he has confirmed that the later vehicles they have in the showroom CAN turn off the automatic headlights but my car and another 2 in the lot from about the same shipment can only turn them off in Park mode. Will be interesting to see if it behaves any differently when I get it back hopefully tomorrow.

As mine is possibly one of the earliest private S5’s in the UK was definitely in Royal Portbury in April and with me early May I thought I would check my version. And it’s definitely R25, whilst looking I did try the Software update link, after what seemed like ages got a screen saying “NEW” with a message saying software up to date.

oooh...that sounds like OTA may be on the way or even working, dare you press the update button is the question?

Interesting to know your car is R25 - really not sure why mine wasn't. Haven't heard back yet so I hope the patch has worked.

Don't get too excited. The MG4 said that and never had an OTA update in 2 1/2 years. It just means the car can't find an update so it presumes it must be up-to-date.

So the latest from the Service Manager is the patch won't apply to the car and is giving errors. He has gone back to MG who have asked for screen shots of the expanded patch files on the USB stick which have been sent, now awaiting response back.

They have had the car 4 days now so I am inclined just to ask for it back and never ask for any software updates to be applied again as it seems to be pretty hit and miss.

I feel sorry for the dealer who has spent a lot of time trying to resolve this and can understand why they are so reluctant to do updates as the system seems to be so flawed and unreliable. I certainly would be very cautious about accepting an OTA update if they ever did arrive.

My only other option I have is to reject the car as I raised these issues at day 20 after hand over but that seems extreme. The things I am trying to get fixed are just the repeated Apple Car Play connection errors on startup, occasional dropping of car play connection during use of maps meaning you have to connect again to use it and the inability to turn off auto head lights which I suspect is just the way it works.

At the end of the day its primary function is a car to go from A to B and it does that pretty well now I have worked out the idiosyncrasies of MGPilot and disabled the things that just plain don't work or are annoying.

Having had a Nissan Juke for 4 days as a courtesy car I really want my MGS5 back!

The common theme here is that MG is still really bad when it comes to infotainment systems. I don’t understand why they can never manage to make a fast and good system that works well for OTA updates.

It feels like almost any other Chinese brand is always better at this than MG are.

I don’t know about that. Whilst I was researching what car to get, I was also looking at member groups for Omoda and BYD and they’re full of people complaining about the infotainment systems.

Omoda/Jaecoo in particular seem to have issues with the DAB radio not working and CarPlay being intermittent.
