Hi everyone,

Today while driving my MG HS, a small stone hit my windscreen and caused a tiny chip with a short star-shaped crack. From inside the car it looks very small (see picture).

I’m wondering if this is something that can be repaired with a DIY windscreen repair kit, or if it’s better to get a professional repair done.

Has anyone had success using kits like Rain-X Windscreen Repair Kit or Permatex Windshield Repair Kit 09103 for this kind of chip?

I’d appreciate any advice before I try fixing it myself or book a repair.

Thanks!

I do have comprehensive cover which might cover this, but the damage is very tiny. I don’t really want to go through the hassle of making a claim and potentially increasing my premium. I’d rather fix it myself or get it repaired privately by a professional.

Your premium shouldn't increase with a windscreen chip repair, and you usually don't even need to claim, just call the windscreen company, they'll ask if you have insurance, then they'll take care of everything.

my endorsement code 026 says, "
Windscreen Cover: We will replace or repair damage to your vehicle's windscreen or windows (excluding sunroofs and panoramic roofs), subject
to a £115 excess for replacement or £25 excess for repair. A £50.00 limit to the value of any replacement or repair work applies should You wish
Us to sub-contract the replacement or repair work to a sub-contractor of Your choice.
There is no different company for it. i am covered with Haven.

I had a chip on a Honda windscreen which I left. Wish I hadn't because with temperature changes I came out one day and found it had run all the way to the edge of the screen. When I got my MG4 I got a chip and Autoglass drilled it a little to relieve the tension around the cracks and it's been OK for 2 years now. I never notice it unless I look for it. NB MOT will fail the screen if the crack is bigger than about a 1cm circle I think.

I had this; I found that my car insurance would pay for the entire repair of the chip (not a replacement windscreen) at a professional repairer namely AUTOGLASS ; I found one close to me (Ashford Kent) - it was done in 45m and I cannot remember where the chip was of see a trace. The process is 'highly technical' - almost magic in fact, - and requires specialist kit. Not a DIY job.
