Hi folks. I've just ordered a Golf Mk6 space saver wheel for our MG5 but I still need to buy a car jack. Does anyone know of any jacks from any other manufacturers that works with the MG5? It's so long since I've used one I can't remember if they're pretty much universal or not. Thanks for your help!

They are fairly universal if built to engage with the pinch weld but make sure you account for the weight of the car as the MG is quite heavy.

Aye - thanks. The MG5 is 1.6 tons or thereabouts so I'll be sure to watch for that. :)

Gross vehicle weight is more like 2 tonnes!
Oh! Kerb weight is 1,550 kg. What's the different between that and gross weight? I can see now that gross vehicle weight rating is 1,974 to 1,992 kg! Thanks for pointing that out!

Sorry to hi-jack the thread (see what i did there ;)), but also wondering if I can use the jack from a VW Golf space saver spare toolkit. The two cars are more or less the same weight, give or take 100kg, so should be OK right? If you are jacking up one 'corner' of the car the jack is not taking the full weight of the car right, because, er, physics?

After extensive research I've answered my own question ...

"In very simple terms, the jack must be able to take at least half the car's weight. Actually, to be safe, you'd have to say a little more than half, just in case there is any variance between passenger and driver side"

Hi. Are you sure a golf is almost the same weight? As discussed above, the gross weight of the MG5 is 2 tons! Think I’m going to buy the one from the Amazon link above.

Gross weight includes anything that might be carried in the car so it's kind of a worst case condition.

One thing that reduces load is the fact that the chassis is not very rigid, so jacking one corner leaves three wheels on the ground. On my other car, jacking one corner lifts that entire side of the car pretty much equally.

The MG5 rides quite high, how high does the jack need to get to lift the wheel off the ground when inflated ?

Looks like the same one but a lot cheaper

or even cheaper..

Aye. I saw that one and have it saved in my eBay watches. It's just that Amazon's return policy is great if it doesn't work with the car for any reason.

Don’t forget the gross weight is inclusive of passengers and baggage.
you would not Jack the car up with the passengers in it.

Gross weight is kerb weight (empty weight) + highest reasonable loadin. e.g. driver + 3 normal passengers. Or driver + mother in law.
