I think public charging still works out cheaper than petrol, although in some cases, only just. Home charging is a must really, and to be honest, If I couldn't have got a fast charger installed at home, I'd have probably thought twice about switching to an EV.
That's like asking are apples cheaper than sausages! It will depend on how much you need to consume of each type. Which, in turn will come down to consumption of vehicles you are comparing.
