Thoughts after 24 hours

Hiya, I picked my S5 up a week ago now and I must say that this is a significant step forward in terms of design, build quality, stability, less road noise, space...this list goes on. However, the DAB radio is hit and miss...more miss than hit...I initially thought that the aerial had not been connected and was going to contact the dealer to ask them to check it for me...you mentioned some DAB radio issues...have you experienced stations dropping in and out? Never had this problem with my previous MG ZS cars...
I’ve had the same experience with DAB reverting to the alternative FM station, I put it down to the aerial in the glass not being as good capturing a weak signal as the physical aerial on the ZS. That said I didn’t have a problem with the in glass aerial on my Mercedes GLA, probably will go back to the dealership when I have time to see if they can do anything about it.

Hi @Sparqx Most DAB radios include a feature where they will switch over to the identical broadcast station in FM if the DAB signal fades out. It sounds counter-intuitive, but I found when I turned that feature off, the DAB drop outs improved - or improved back to the same dropout spots on the motorway as I had in my previous ID4 & Leaf. My guess is the software is being overly aggressive about jumping out of the DAB band. I forget what this toggle is called in the MG radio options, but it's there somewhere.

Your point 2.
The MG4, and I expect all the MG range has no regen in reverse.
Possibly because the current is going the wrong way.
I doubt a software update can fix this. I think there would need to be additional hardware to swap charging polarity.
We have a Honda e as well and I find the one pedal driving a bit of a pain when trying to reverse/park so typically turn it off for those manoeuvres.

My car is two months old and I’ve never had DAB logos apart from a couple of the BBC stations.

But when I then change to Clyde or independent radio, the BBC logo stays on! ***.

The Weather app has never worked. Complete waste of screen space in my car anyway.

My software version is something like r33. I did ask the Chorley dealership to make sure it was at the latest version before I collected the car. From my general reading it seems like this version is 6-9 months old.

Again ***.

Likewise, I’ve never been able to put on the heating using the i smart app.

And the car has tried to kill me a couple of times because the road white lines meant it pushed me into the centre with oncoming vehicles!! so I had to use quite a lot of strength to keep the car to the left !!! And then both hands are fighting the steering.

I know it can be turned off, but 5% of the time I forget.

Ohhh and the travel plans and the other tab on that screen has also never worked. It gives some Javascript and computer code type of error message.

But also annoyingly, the car is not 3 phase AC . Therefore, I wasted £150 buying that type of cable. It means the maximum speed is around 6.2 kW on AC.

The plugs I use are generally 11 or 22 kW. When I researched the car, my trophy long range version was meant to have 11 kW.

Sigh.

You might be better off posting this on the MG4 forum.

The steering pushing you into oncoming vehicles sounds like it hasn't had the SC07 update for the Lane Keep Assist

The 3 phase charging was only available on the early editions of the Trophy but as you say the car is only 2 months old it would never have been part of it's specification.

But apart from that, like it? 😉🙂👍

Going back to the reversing with OPD, surely for safety OPD requires the use of the radar unit which of course will not be looking backwards?

Are there people who drive 300 miles without stopping? Yes, but it is a tiny minority (in the UK).
Not here in Australia either. The concept is ridiculous... and DANGEROUS!!!

Having to stop every 2 or so hours to charge for 30 minutes is actually a good thing. You need a rest.

There does seem to be quite a few that claim to do this regularly, they are of course admitting to being dangerous drivers in my humble opinion.

I can't do it now, this old bladder doesn't allow it. But when I was younger, fitter with a better attention span. 3hrs between stops wasn't a problem. A drive to Margaret River for a surf, used to happen most weekends. I'll admit the return journey after a weekend's hard surfing was more problematic. But the corrugated limestone road kept you awake.
Plus of course there were mates in the car talking and chatting.

A kind of admission that really you should have stopped to be safe ?

In my younger days I was working nights in the steelworks and spending the next day with my new girlfriend (now my wife) getting very little sleep. On two journeys back from her house I had two very near misses falling asleep at the wheel. From that day on, 50+ years ago if I feel slightly tired, I stop, have a coffee etc.

The MGS5 is a bit odd . . . the only radar on the car is in fact backwards facing - which is why the lack of OPD in reverse is a weird omission. Whereas forward driving - which has great OPD - is solely camera (vision) based . . . . like Tesla.

Not really, if I'd felt tired I probably would have. Or let one of the other guys take over
That’s the thing, we all feel ok, none of us go out to have an accident, just that most of us are poor judges of our abilities. Just ask any drunk driver after an accident, they were certain they were safe after a drink.

There is a front radar, which is used for the adaptive cruise control (amongst other things).

That is a true statement on the MG4. On the MGS5 . . that is not correct - ELK, ACC . . all of the forward "intelligent driver assistance" features are vision only. Check out the diagram on page 236 - Radar Mounting Position - of the MGS5 Owners Manual for clarification.

For the record, I WISH it did have a front radar . . . I for one am less than impressed with any OEM relying on vision only. Musk is an idiot.

How do humans drive? Do they have forward facing radar or a vision system?
I had the privilege of having a Tesla model X for 6 months whilst working in USA. I had to drive 2 or 3 times per week from New York to Pittsburgh, circa 500 miles. The model X was the first electric car I had driven and the first self driving car, it was incredible. You see what the car could see in terms of other cars on the information screen and it drove unaided out of New York to Pittsburgh and not once gave me cause for concern. Brilliant system and Elon Musk really is not an idiot which you claim, he a very talented engineer and visionary. This is guy that’s made his own fortune, started a company which is now bigger than VAG, GM and Ford put together. Developed rockets that can land. Definitely not an idiot.
