How do humans drive? Do they have forward facing radar or a vision system?
I had the privilege of having a Tesla model X for 6 months whilst working in USA. I had to drive 2 or 3 times per week from New York to Pittsburgh, circa 500 miles. The model X was the first electric car I had driven and the first self driving car, it was incredible. You see what the car could see in terms of other cars on the information screen and it drove unaided out of New York to Pittsburgh and not once gave me cause for concern. Brilliant system and Elon Musk really is not an idiot which you claim, he a very talented engineer and visionary. This is guy that’s made his own fortune, started a company which is now bigger than VAG, GM and Ford put together. Developed rockets that can land. Definitely not an idiot.

I'm old enough and wise enough not to do flame wars online - but I am 100% comfortable with the statement as posted above. Musk is indeed an idiot as his bladder damage from a long term ketamine habit clearly demonstrates.

That is a true statement on the MG4. On the MGS5 . . that is not correct - ELK, ACC . . all of the forward "intelligent driver assistance" features are vision only. Check out the diagram on page 236 - Radar Mounting Position - of the MGS5 Owners Manual for clarification.

For the record, I WISH it did have a front radar . . . I for one am less than impressed with any OEM relying on vision only. Musk is an idiot.

Does it work at all well for ACC?

With radar on the MG4, despite a ton of software updates it is still not as good as other makers ACC solutions. Mostly ok but then it loses its brains and brakes at nothing or gets confused on sharp bends. It is usable but clunky.

Given MG's software prowess to date, I would naturally assume a vision-only solution would be terrible, but I'd love to be surprised.

Hello all. I took possession of my MG5S LR Trophy yesterday (in Piccadilly Blue) . . and just wanted to post a few random comments and questions after a grand total of 24 hours of ownership. First a big shout out to @LaS who came back to answer his own question about how to turn off the speed limit announcements - I suspect every new owner will be looking for that trick on day 1. (You have to disable it in two places - MG Pilot and in Navigation Settings). On to my list:

1. The one pedal driving switch is ignored in reverse. Its a bit jarring to change how you use the brake pedal each time when backing out. Hopefully this can be a future software update.
2. The DAB radio isn’t picking up the station logos. Small item clearly.
3. What is everyone’s thoughts/plans for the extra physical blade keys? For any MG4 owners on here, on the MGS5 they still give you the little blade keys, but they are no longer hidden inside the fob. Are we expected to carry them on our keyrings in addition to the fob? Or do we leave them at home, in the junk drawer in the kitchen . . .
4. On that same issue of keys, I’ve yet to figure out how to use the iSmart app to actually start the car. I have it registered and bound to the car and can use it to unlock the doors . . . but when I try to use the keyless start feature, it gives me an message about not being connected via bluetooth.

That’s my list one day later.

Still finding my around the screen controls, not found the way to switch off speed limit announcements so your note was a bonus. I don't need to be told what the speed limit is (my wife does that) and the car seems to misread speed signs regularly so it's rather annoying.
I leave the selection in Normal and medium regeneration and I'm getting 4.3 miles/kWh and surprise, when I charge overnight it shows 302 miles range ( Trophy LR!).
Additional blade key: bit of a surprise that one, my old Toyota RAV4 had it inside the key fob but as others have said on here I never needed to use it.
Boot is a bit smaller but it's the height when floor is level that is the main concern, only just Labrador height.
My only dislike at the moment is the control screen takes too long otherwise loving it. Came from a Hybrid RAV4 (49 mpg) and I should be saving about £1000 a year.

My dealer said it was a mistake and they plan to change the keys soon. Personally I don't care, I'll just carry it on the keyring.

Just to note that there have been reports of phantom-braking incidents on the MGS5, as there were on Tesla (see Bjorn Nyland videos, including the 1000km challenge with the S5). The CV system misinterprets objects on the road, or objects near the road as being in the lane ahead. Bjorn suspected that there was no radar to assist with or correct this. Good to have confirmation of this here - thanks.

Definitely uses regen.

Hi @Sparqx Most DAB radios include a feature where they will switch over to the identical broadcast station in FM if the DAB signal fades out. It sounds counter-intuitive, but I found when I turned that feature off, the DAB drop outs improved - or improved back to the same dropout spots on the motorway as I had in my previous ID4 & Leaf. My guess is the software is being overly aggressive about jumping out of the DAB band. I forget what this toggle is called in the MG radio options, but it's there somewhere.

Real world of 250/290 WLTP * 100 = 86% which is not bad. It varies widely but can be anything from 75% up in my experience.

I am getting 4.1-4.3 atm, so 265-275 ish ...

I've had a this a couple of times going under gantries on the motorway, even though the Intelligent Speed Limit Assist is off and the gantry signs are all blank.

It seems to be ones where there is an extra "black rectangle" sign above the dynamic speed limit signs, like this one:

Concerning the app key start feature. You need to connect you phone to the MG_CarKey bluetooth signal.

The feature is ok but clunky and I thinkyou will normally just rollback to using the key.

To get rid of the annoying voice, if for instance doing 2 mph over the speed limit as well as not looking where I’m driving because I’m wondering what the F*** is happening hearing a voice command, including several other unhelpful verbal detritus, the voice volume has to be turned to zero or off (can’t remember which)


BUT doing that, Waze and Google maps guidance cannot be heard either.

On last week’s trip to Wales from Hampshire, I decided voice OFF was the more peaceful than needing audible guidance from Waze, as looking at Waze, I was no longer getting nagged at by a machine.

Seems a pity this one cannot be ironed out by a software mod.

I'm (unreliably informed) apparently MG are working on a new key to hold the blade key, that is definitely a step backwards and for sure if they do modify the key, existing owners won't be offered one!

I have actually been able to unlock the MGS5 from the iSmart app, without the keys present, but a few months ago whilst on holiday in Corfu, I lost the MG4 keys (presumably slipping from my pocket in the hire car) on returning to Bournemouth Airport, I was unable to unlock the car with the phone app, I have an idea it was down to 4g signal, which I find unusual at an airport, I was able to unlock the car at home without the key being present.

There are instructions on the forums here for how you can disable the speedlimit warnings.
There are two places, one is in your settings and the other is in the navigation application (the native one). Both have to be disabled as far as i recall.

As for the key, i dont know why but you in the UK have a different key than what i have here in Norway.
I have the "normal" key with the physical key located inside the fob.

From the instruction manual:

I have type A which has the physical key (4) hidden inside it, like option C. Option B seems to have it separately, and with a loop.
Im sure there is a reason why the UK uses option B, but no idea why.
