Tomato Energy

As one of the "earlier" movers to Tomato Energy and who has a SMETS 1 meter (so no "real" consumption data available to TE) all my bills have been estimated. The earliest ones had the required discounts for late billing (I received no bills until July 2025) but all my bills since May have been at "full" price, and actual consumption (as shown on my HUGO Pro app) was rather less.

I spoke earlier today to TE Customer Care to ask when they were likely to be able to invoice me for the actual level of consumption (knowing full well that my meter needs to be changed by TE if they are to gain full access). I was told they were prepared to accept the data provided by downloading it as a spreadsheet from my HUGO dashboard, which I have now done and submitted to TE for the period May to August 2025.

Assuming I have done this procedure correctly and the data is what they require I have also asked on what date I need to submit any future monthly downloads of the consumption spreadsheet.

I will report back if/when I hear anything

Why not simply submit readings into Mywatts, you would then get an accurate bill while the metering is sorted out.

Be careful if TE do change your meter, I have seen comments from a couple of people that they have installed 'half hour' meters, this is bad news for consumers because youre precluded from several suppliers - Octopus being one of them.

I've never tried that because, of course, MyWatts has never "worked" for me. But can you submit readings that show the different "time of day" usage and hence tariffs? When I looked at the app it seems to offer only the option to submit the latest overall figure.

Thanks for the heads-up on this! Though Customer Care were extremely vague about when or whether they would ever seek to change my meter.

Ah yes, I forgot that aspect, youre right, probably not.

My commercial account with Tomato for my shop is only single rate, I send them readings weekly via MyWatts.

Half Hour meter is bad news, I inherited one with my shop and it's impossible so far to get it downgraded to a SMETS2 smart meter. When you attempt to get quotes for energy supply 50% or more of companies wont quote due to half hour meter.

Anyone jumped ship yet? Looks like the end for Tomato.
I have to admit I have recently jumped ship back to Octopus Go. I had a £40 credit on my account with them as they never billed my final bill when switching to Tomato. All went seamlessly and straight onto the EV tariff within two days.

My concern with Tomato was that should the worse ever happen, the length of time it may take to actually sort out and get onto another providers EV tariif that I want (who could be anyone to start with).

Good luck to all others sticking it out ... I really hope it works out as I would most likely come back if and when the problems have been sorted. I don't profess to know a lot about the Tomato situation but once they can advertise for customers again I will consider them again if their rates are anything like as good as they were.

I did quite a while ago. Never actually got a bill from TE despite asking many times. I went back to Octopus on the same tariff as previously, as I couldn’t manage the uncertainty. Octopus were brilliant, I have to say.
TE finally billed me for just the standing charges, and I doubt I was the only customer in that scenario.
They still have a manned stand in Milton Keynes shopping centre - I was there on Tuesday this week.

If they're not billing their customers

But they are!

The problem is that, in my case, because I have a SMETS 1 meter which, apparently they cannot access, all my bills from September 24 to August 25 have been estimated. And the estimates have all, without fail, been too high, i.e., I am being over-charged! I can prove this (and have done so in emails to TE) because I have the HUGO Pro app and it can take half-hourly readings from my meter. I can access and download each month's readings and extrapolate from those figures exactly how much my bill, including Standing Charge and VAT, should be each month.

At the suggestion of a TE Customer Service agent I have sent a copy of the HUGO Pro downloaded file (so the "original", not my extrapolations) for each month since March 2025. So far, they have ignored those files, to the point where, when I sent in the September figures, I made a formal complaint that a) I wanted "corrected" bills for March to August and b) a correct bill for September, not one that is estimated. Perhaps it goes without saying that I have heard nothing by way of reply!

If it wasn't for the fact that their per unit prices are so much lower than any other supplier I, too, would have "jumped ship".

I had a new SMETS2 meter installed 3 weeks before changing to TE, yet they still manage to bill me. The apps didn’t work, so I had very little idea of my usage.
As I said, I can’t have been the only customer not to have paid for my electricity due to TE’s incompetence.

No I haven't, yet.

What's the evidence for this? I'd genuinely like to know!

As of October 17, 2025, Tomato Energy has not officially entered administration. However, the company is facing significant financial distress and regulatory scrutiny.

⚠️ Current Status

  • Notice of Intention to Appoint Administrators: Tomato Energy has filed a Notice of Intention to Appoint Administrators, indicating they are considering administration due to escalating debts and liquidity issues. smart-energy.uk
  • £1.5 Million Fine Proposed by Ofgem: The energy regulator, Ofgem, has proposed a £1.5 million financial penalty against Tomato Energy for failing to maintain sufficient liquidity to meet its financial obligations. Ofgem
  • £3 Million Debt: The company owes over £3 million to creditors, and Ofgem has prohibited it from acquiring new customers until the debt is addressed. utilityweek.co.uk

🔄 What This Means for You

  • No Immediate Impact on Energy Supply: Your energy supply is not expected to be interrupted at this time. If administration occurs, Ofgem's Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) process would ensure continuity of service. smart-energy.uk
  • Monitor Communications: Keep an eye out for official communications from Ofgem or Tomato Energy regarding any changes to your account or energy supply.
  • Avoid Switching Suppliers: It's advisable not to switch suppliers at this moment, as doing so could complicate the transfer process if the SoLR process is triggered. smart-energy.uk

📝 Recommended Actions

  1. Document Your Account: Take note of your current meter readings, recent bills, and any credit balances.
  2. Stay Informed: Regularly check your email and postal mail for updates from Tomato Energy or Ofgem.
  3. Continue Payments: Unless advised otherwise, continue paying your bills as normal to avoid any potential issues.
  4. Prepare for Potential Transition: If Tomato Energy enters administration, Ofgem will appoint a new supplier to take over your account. You will be notified of this transition and can choose to switch suppliers once the process is complete.
