Hi

Below is a list of file formats that is supported or not by the MG ZS EV infotainment system (2019/2020). Check this post as I will update after each batch of testing. I'm using a program called Handbrake to recode the video file.
Also I'm not testing 4k file formats.

Settings on Handbrake:
Encoder Preset: Fast
Encoder Level: 4
Peak Framerate Set, Ave Bitrate (as below)mpbs (XX000kbps)

MKV
1080p x265 10bit - FAIL
1080p x265 - FAIL
1080p x264 80mpbs - FAIL
1080p x264 40mpbs Audio AAC@160 - PASS
1080p x264 40mpbs Audio MP3@160 - PASS
1080p x264 40mpbs Audio AC3@160 - FAIL
1080p x264 30mpbs Audio AC3@160 - PASS

1080p Theora - FAIL
1080p VP8 - FAIL
1080p VP9 - FAIL audio only
720p x264 40mpbs Audio AAC@160 - PASS

MP4
1080p x264 40mpbs Audio AAC@160 - PASS
1080p x264 40mpbs Audio MP3@160 - PASS
1080p x264 40mpbs Audio AC3@160 - FAIL
1080p x264 30mpbs Audio AC3@160 - PASS

1080p x265 - FAIL
1080p x265 - FAIL

1080p mpeg2 40mpbs Audio AAC@160 - PASS
1080p mpeg2 40mpbs Audio MP3@160 - PASS
1080p mpeg2 40mpbs Audio AC3@160 - PASS
1080p mpeg4 40mpbs Audio AAC@160 - PASS
1080p mpeg4 40mpbs Audio MP3@160 - PASS
1080p mpeg4 40mpbs Audio AC3@160 - PASS

Notes: Im finding that if the audio is larger (eg AC3) the video bitrate needs to be slightly dropped to allow it to be played. Also if there is no mpbs next to it, I've tested at 10mpbs and it still failed and therefore i'm assuming it not supported file format. When using a slower but higher bitrate encoder, eg Slow with level 5, it allows a full 40-60mbps bitrate to be encoded but can often cause the file to fail.

Sorry if I’m being a bit dim. Does this mean that those that pass can be played on the main screen? Is this done via usb? So load a video in the acceptable format and play via usb?

Apart from ones you make yourself (home videos), where do you get these videos from, can you buy/download them from the web, I haven't a clue when it comes to anything newer than a DVD ?
Can you rip them from DVDs ?

Indeed you can, a quick use of Google will assist. You can also download from Youtube.
There are also various other means of finding and downloading 'videos' that I of course know nothing about whatsoever.

Legally cant advise you how to get copyrighted videos. Big no no. Also a lot of videos bought from amazon and apple are protected by DRM (digital rights management) and therefore cant advise how to break DRM on said videos. DVDs is easier to rip, but thanks to the high court quashed a law which permitted ripping under private use, so again cant advise how to. Google it at your own risk.

Currently I use a jelly fish sample video from Jellyfish Bitrate Test Files and I enjoy the 30second loop. Also I use a home made video for some tests as well, I can not share it due to unlicensed music (well, Spotify for personal use is licensed for, but once i published the video, that music would then be unlicensed) is being played in background and therefore a similar copyright issue. (Could have played an audio track that I do have the streaming/video license for but couldn't be bothered and I wanted a banging tune)

MakeMKV will allow ripping of DVDs...BluRay too. Although it didn't work with my MacBook Pro it works perfectly on my Linux systems but you do have to follow the installation instructions to the letter. Registration is as simple as Google searching for it. This will take you to a makeMKV forum where you will find the answer to registering your copy perfectly freely no questions asked by the producer of the program.
Hope this helps some that have someone else that may want to watch a favourite film while on the move.

Hopefully not whilst driving..
What's the legal angle on playing videos, whilst car in motion, that are visible to the driver?

An easy way to get video off DVD or internet onto a USB drive is to play it on your Windows 10 PC and record using in-built X-BOX recorder (Windows+Alt+G).

Hey I'm new to forum,

Any way to get usb videos to play whilst in motion, ofc driving safely. Just for my passengers. Mg zs ev 2023

Right, appreciate the feedback.

Will have to settle for ferma or carstream or acquire wireless adapter with netflix/ youtube 🤓
